Faster travel in the KPE thanks to higher speed limits

As previously reported, commuters plying the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) will be able to drive slightly faster from the 29th of December as the speed limit will be raised to 80km/h - in line with the Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) opening on the same day.
To increase safety in the tunnel, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) has implemented additional measures, from installing reflective strips on tunnel walls to leaving broader lane markings to guide motorists along tight bends as a result of the speed limit increase.
Still, the 70km/h speed limit is enforced near the northbound Upper Paya Lebar Road exit and southbound Airport Road entrance due to the 'tighter geometry' of one bend. Signs and markings will be put up to remind motorists before they reach the stretches where the limit applies.
"This is a correct move. You don't want to have a speed differential as far as possible," commented Gopinath Menon, Adjunct Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Mr. Menon, a retired LTA planner, commented to The Straits Times, the reflective strips and broader lane markings are necessary when the speed limit is raised.
The speed limit in the KPE is largely overseen by laser cameras, which detected 29,404 speeding violations last year.
To prepare for the opening of the $4.3 billion MCE, the LTA, together with the Singapore Civil Defence Force and Singapore Police Force, conducted a joint emergency exercise yesterday. Motorists who encounter a fire or other emergencies while in the tunnel can dial 995 for help or tune in to the local radio for emergency announcements and instructions.
Additionally LTA adviced motorists to practice extra caution when travelling in the tunnels that could stretch as much as 12km.
