Ferrari has unveiled its first all-electric SUV: The Ferrari Luce.
First things first. This is not just the first all-electric SUV from the firm; it's also the first car from the brand to offer a total of five seats - since there’s no need to find space for a gearbox at the rear.
You're probably also wondering about all that new sheet metal. Designed by a team led by Sir Jony Ive and Marc Newson, this new Ferrari Luce is said to mark a new design language from the firm. And what a new look it is: The Luce embraces what is described as a ‘pure and simple’ design ethos, with its body taking the form of a glass house sitting atop a shell-like form.
This lower section features transparent light panels at the front and rear, with its rear lights a clear nod to cars such as the 360 Modena and 458 Italia. Ferrari adds that this Luce also features the largest staggered wheel diameters on a series-production Ferrari road car. These are 23-inch items at the front and 24-inch items at the rear.
Sitting within this body is a new bespoke platform, said to maximise interior space and eliminate the need for a central tunnel while integrating the battery beneath the floor and rear seats. Speaking of which, this Ferrari Luce makes use of a 122kWh. This battery can be recharged at a maximum power of 350kW, allowing up to 70kWh to be added in 20 minutes at a fast-charging station.
This battery pack comes integrated with the car's chassis and body form to optimise structural performance and efficiency, and for this Luce to claim an increase of over 25% bending and 35% torsional rigidity compared to previous four-door models from the firm.
Power is fed from this battery into a total of four F80-derived permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, allowing the car to deliver a maximum output of 765kW with launch control activated. That is enough to see the 2,260kg car sprinting from zero to 100km/h in just 2.5 seconds.
To ensure control at these speeds, the Luce is graced with an active suspension system derived from the F80 and an independently steering rear axle.
Then there's the cabin. Already teased in a few images weeks ago, this cabin is set to make use of a total of three displays all developed with Samsung Display. Ferrari adds that this cabin will also make use of precision-engineered mechanical buttons, dials, toggles and switches.
Those seated at the front will be treated to heated seats complete with an optional massage function and the cabin also makes use of a 21-speaker state-of-the-art audio system.
Ferrari states that the Luce will be offered with a dedicated eight-year warranty covering key electric powertrain components (front and rear axles, battery and charging system).
