Future of Alfa MiTo GTA uncertain
23 Jul 2009|4,251 views
Reports have surfaced that Alfa Romeo has cancelled their MiTo GTA hot hatch, although there are some who suggest that the project has merely been put on hold, and not cancelled indefinitely.
According to an Alfa spokesperson, the MiTo GTA has been put on hold because "it's hard to justify building such as high performance car at this present time as the financial crisis means that it's not economically viable. And, sadly, it may never be." However, an insider source says that there is a definite desire to see the car being built.
The MiTo GTA was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, and Alfa CEO Luca de Meo confirmed the production of the car way back in June 2008.
The MiTo GTA was to have under-floor aerodynamics enhancements, a revised front suspension with new geometry with aluminium leading arms, and all new bushings for the rear suspension. An active suspension management system with advanced damper control was also planned.
Under the hood, the MiTo GTA would have been powered by a 1.8 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine producing 240bhp, with direct injection and dual variable valve timing.
Should Alfa change their minds, the MiTo GTA would be expected on the roads by mid-2010, at the earliest.
