A new crime prevention initiative was launched by Bedok Police Division. The Straits Times reported that 400 cars, all belonging to public volunteers, will be installed with in-car cameras to keep a lookout for theft and vandalism.
Motorists with cameras already installed in their vehicles can also volunteer for this programme, known as 'Vehicles-On-Watch'.
Some devices are switched on 24 hours a day, while others are on standby and use motion detection to activate the video recording function. These video recordings can help the Police with investigations. For instance, camera footage from a van helped the authorities nab a thief who stole items from a vehicle in Geylang. The thief was charged in court and jailed for 18 months.
Car parks involved in the pilot phase of this scheme include those located in Changi, Bedok, Marine Parade, Geylang, Tampines and Pasir Ris. They are identified by a white-and-blue sign at their entrances which reads 'Your Camera, Our Security'.
