Ioniq 5 robotaxi to be built at HMGICS

American autonomous vehicle company Motional has announced that it will be manufacturing its Ioniq 5 robotaxi right here in Singapore at the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre.

The firm has additionally announced that this robotaxi is one of the first SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicles to have been certified under the U.S.A's Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Motional states that it already has a team located on site to assist with production of its robotaxi at the centre's automated production facility. This team will conduct the necessary diagnostics, software development, calibration, and validation tasks to ensure that finished examples of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi meet its exact specifications and are fit for deployment.

Both Motional and Hyundai Motor Group have spent the last years preparing for the production of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi, which has included the development of a series of prototype vehicles that have been tested both in the U.S.A (see it in action in Las Vegas here) and Singapore. Commercial production of the Ioniq 5 robotaxi is said to be already underway, with the first models already present at Motional's facility in the U.S.A. The vehicles will undergo a testing and safety validation processes by Motional before starting commercial service in 2024.
