The Sesto Elemento was unveiled at last year’s Paris Motor Show as a showcase for Lamborghini’s technological innovations, and Lamborghini had then denied speculation that it was the Gallardo’s replacement or a new addition to its range, as it said that the carbon fibre prototype was too radical for production. However, it has now decided to produce 20 units of the Sesto Elemento, starting from 2013.Lamborghini President Stephan Winkelmann explained the company’s change of heart: “The excellent feedback and the numerous requests we’ve had from our customers have really convinced us to embark on the challenge of producing a vehicle with unique characteristics. We are proud that what a year ago was a technology demonstrator of future super sports cars, even though in working order, will become a small series reality.”
The Sesto Elemento is Lamborghini's first supercar since the 1986 Countach Evoluzione that weighs less than 1,000kg, at 999kg This, combined with the same motorsport-sourced V10 engine with 570bhp that is used in the Gallardo Superleggera and Stradale, gives the Sesto Elemento a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.75 kg per bhp and a 2.5 second timing for the 0-100km/h sprint.
