Lexus launches the highly-anticipated all new UX compact SUV

While globally the Lexus UX is considered to be the fifth SUV in Lexus' lineup, it's only the third one to be launched in Singapore after the Lexus RX and the Lexus NX.

Regardless of global or local context, the all new luxury compact SUV will pit against strong external competitors like the Audi Q3, the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz GLA and the Volvo XC40.

Internally, the Lexus UX will slot nicely below the popular NX in terms of size and price. Measuring 4,495mm with a wheelbase of 2,640mm, the all new Lexus may be small, but it has the aggressive looks and quality finishing that could be its key weapon of destruction against its peers.

In terms of cabin space, the UX obviously cannot be compared to the NX, which shares the same underpinnings of the Toyota RAV4. That's because the new SUV is based on the GA-C platform that's mechanically similar to the popular Toyota C-HR compact car.

The driver will be faced with an array of buttons and controls on the steering wheel. As before, the Remote Touch Interface that controls the infotainment system takes centre stage. However, Lexus engineers have worked hard to give the UX a more functional proposition.

Unlike any Lexus model before, a range of audio switches now surrounds the hand rest, making it a lot safer for the driver to do necessary adjustments without taking his eyes off the road.

There are two models at launch: The petrol-only Lexus UX200 and the hybrid UX250h. The UX200 is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-banger powerplant that puts out 168bhp and 205Nm of twisting force. The engine is, for the first time, mated to a direct shift CVT gearbox that has a mechanical gearset, which is used to start from a standstill and accelerate before transferring to the CVT system.

The UX250h, on the other hand, sports a more conventional setup. It combines its 2.0-litre engine with two electric motors for a total output of 176bhp and is lovingly married to a regular CVT gearbox.

Unfortunately, no F Sport option is available for Singapore. Lexus will be launching the all new compact SUV at the Singapore Motor Show next year in January.
