More last mile delivery options and initiatives to spur the electric vehicle sector are incoming for Singapore. The new moves come as the LTA concluded the third edition of its Land Transport Industry Day.
On the last mile delivery front, the LTA has announced at the event that it has approved two electric motorcycle and battery swapping regulatory sandbox applications. These two applications come from electric scooter firms Gogoro and MO Batteries.
Pilot trials will be run in the coming months to test the use of electric motorcycles with battery swapping capability for last mile deliveries Gogoro will partner Jardine Cycle & Carriage to conduct last mile delivery trials using their electric motorcycles and battery swap stations, while MO Batteries will work with SingPost and security solutions firm Prosegur to conduct pilots using their electric motorcycles as well as a combination of centralised charging and battery swap and storage.
The trials will be implemented in the next few weeks and will run for 12 months. According to The Straits Times, Gogoro will field 20 electric motorcycles and 100 swoppable batteries across two stations, while MO Batteries will trial six electric motorcycles, 30 swoppable batteries and 14 chargers across two battery store-and-swop stations.
New initiatives to support the growing electric vehicle sector here in Singapore were also announced.
These include, for example, the launch of a National Electric Vehicle Specialist Safety (NESS) certification programme in partnership with SkillsFuture Singapore.
The LTA has also launched a NESS certification programme, which will train technicians with skills to service electric and hybrid vehicles The LTA states that new skills training courses will be added as part of a broader effort to build a pipeline of skilled workers equipped to work on the safety and maintenance of electric vehicles.
Certificate holders trained within the programme will be equipped with skills and knowledge to safely conduct electric vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle servicing. The LTA states that these industry-recognised certifications will pave the way for automotive technicians to subsequently receive further specialised training in electric vehicles.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and the ITE will be the first training providers to introduce new courses with the NESS certification, and more information on these courses will be uploaded on the respective schools' websites as well as on MySkillsFuture portal in due course.
The LTA has also revealed a new Land Transport Innovation Portal at the event.
An innovation call for innovative solutions to monitor train and bus capacity, as well as to improve commuter experience was also made by the LTA This portal, the LTA claims, will spur co-creation and innovation with the land transport industry be serving as a one-stop platform for industry and technology partners to access latest information on LTA's research and development grant calls and innovation challenges. You can access the portal here.
And in tandem with this launch, two innovation calls have also been published.
The first is the Xcite joint innovation call by LTA and Enterprise Singapore, in collaboration with IPI Singapore. Through this call, the LTA, SCDF and EnterpriseSG hope to work with start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises to develop innovative solutions to raise the safety of parked electric vehicles.
The second innovation call meanwhile, launched by the LTA and the Infocomm Media Development Authority, offers up to $200,000 worth of prize money to technology solvers to propose innovative solutions for issues including road tunnel maintenance, route planning for oversized vehicles, as well as bus and train capacity monitoring.
