Lotus has revealed more of the four-cylinder Emira.
The car is set to utilise the Mercedes-AMG M139 2.0-litre engine, with its cylinder block made from an advanced chill-casting process as opposed to the conventional sand-casting method.
This process, Lotus states, results in higher strength and durability, allowing it to better withstand high loads. The engine also utilises a closed-deck design of maximum stiffness, with a patented low-friction coating in the cylinder bores. Both the steel crankshaft and aluminum pistons are forged for an optimal balance of strength and low weight.
Fuel will be fed into this engine via a 200bar direct injection system for precise control of the amount of fuel, and the spray pattern delivered. These are joined by port fuel injectors to deliver the correct amount of fuel needed when the engine is at full load. Meanwhile, air is forced into the engine via a twin-scroll turbocharger, which gets an electronically controlled wastegate to manage boost pressure effectively.
Lotus states that these technologies will give the four-cylinder Emira a total power output of 360bhp and a peak torque of 430Nm. This, paired with a Mercedes-AMG eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, allows the Emira to reach 100km/h in 4.4 seconds. This output will make the four-cylinder Lotus Emira the most powerful four-cylinder Lotus. A fitting finale to a long line that stretches back to include models such as the Elise, Elan, and Elite. The V6-equipped Emira when paired with the six-speed manual gearbox, will complete the same sprint in 4.3 seconds.
Lotus states that the engine has also received a unique in-house calibration, which sees it sustaining peak torque of 430Nm from 3,000rpm to 5,500rpm, delivering an authentic sports car driving experience while delivering the necessary refinement for day-to-day use.
On the handling front, the four-cylinder Lotus Emira will get a choice of specially-developed tyres which are asymmetrically sized to suit the steering and traction requirements. Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport tyres are offered as standard, offering high performance with enhanced all-weather capability, although customers who opt for the Sports chassis will also be able to have their car with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, which are designed for track use.
The car will utilse a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster in its cabin, paired with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system complete with integrated navigation and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity as standard for selected markets. The cabin also gets 12-way electronically-adjustable seats, available in either Nappa leather or black Alcantara, alongside a 10-channel, 560W premium audio system was developed for the Emira in partnership with KEF.
