LTA gives update on renewal programme for Bukit Panjang LRT
31 Jul 2025|55 views
The LTA has shared that its ongoing Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) renewal programme has made steady progress since its inception in 2022.
To date, 14 of 19 new third-generation Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) have been deployed into passenger service, while 11 of 13 second-generation LRVs have also been upgraded and pushed back into passenger service.
Works have also been carried out progressively to upgrade the existing BPLRT signalling system to a new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, similar to that used on MRT lines. This new CBTC signalling system allows better control of train speeds, which will allow commuters to enjoy smoother and more reliable rides.
The remaining new third-generation LRVs and upgraded second-generation LRVs, along with the completion of CBTC signalling works, are expected to be deployed by the end of 2025.
The LTA has also said that the new CBTC system will be subjected to rigorous testing, and to facilitate this, will close the BPLRT loop on two Sundays (31 August 2025 and 21 September 2025). On both days, a shuttle bus service, LRT Shuttle B, will be provided and operate in the direction of BPLRT Service B at a frequency of five to 15 minutes.
