LTA hosts 2024 Car-Free Sunday
20 Mar 2024|457 views
It may have been a scorchingly sunny afternoon, but the high temperatures were not enough to dissuade many from heading out to take an alternative means of seeing our beloved downtown and Civic District.
At least, that's what the crowds that were present for the 2024 iteration of LTA's Car-Free Sunday seemed to suggest.
Attendees got to walk, cycle, or skate along Esplanade Drive and St. Andrew's Road as part of the Car-Free Sunday
Organised by the LTA alongside organisations including the Health Promotion Board, Housing and Development Board, National Parks Board, Sport Singapore and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the Sunday saw St. Andrew's Road and Esplanade Drive as well as sections of the road around Cecil Street and Robinson Road closed to vehicles in order to allow pedestrians and Active Mobility device users to enjoy activities on the streets without vehicular traffic.
These activities included Piloxing right along the Anderson Bridge, while a 'Really Really Free Market' was also set up along Esplanade Drive, where all were free to share or trade items.
Both the LTA and URA hosted displays to where visitors could offer feedback on the shape of our urban landscape at the event
Cyclists and other Active Mobility Device users were also invited to test out their knowledge on the rules of conduct and learn about the best practices when sharing the roads all though a variety of activity stations located right outside the National Gallery!
And of course, with COE premiums having reached new highs in 2023, the authorities also took the opportunity to set up displays encouraging all to make use of walking, cycling, or public transport here in Singapore. Those visiting the LTA's booth, for example, simply needed to share their reason to 'Move Lite' to get score some stickers and drinks, as well as a limited edition tote bag.
Many opted to brave the hot weather to see our downtown via a different means of transport for the day, some in more exotic devices than others
On the topic of our urban landscape, attendees also got to see and share their ideas on the Urban Redevelopment Authority's Draft Master Plan 2025.
And for those who wanted to cruise through the various displays and soak in the sights of our downtown, bicycle sharing firm Anywheel was also present with a host of bicycles for all to rent, with those completing a journey at Car-Free Sunday even offered a free gift.
