Commuters whom do not own a car but would like to have access to one on occasion - like family outings, shopping or ferrying elderly parents to medical appointments - could soon turn to car-sharing according to Transport Minister Mr Lui Tuck Yew.
Mr Lui was addressing the parliament and mentioned the LTA and the housing board are currently working on making car-sharing more accessible in the heartlands. As of now, there are 8,000 registered members for car-sharing schemes - a 33 percent increase compared to a year ago.
Private companies offering car-sharing schemes park their vehicles at HDB multi-storey car parks among other car parks. According to The Straits Times, the Ministry for Transport is also studying on the possibilities of liberalising the private car rental scheme. The scheme currently allows car owners to rent out their cars on weekends and public holidays.
