Like Lotus and arch rivals Ferrari, the MP4-28 is cosmetically similar to last year's MP4-27, with most changes to happen beneath its sleek silvery bodywork. Jenson Button, star driver of McLaren commented, "under the skin this is so, so different." Like Ferrari, the MP4-28 features a pull-rod front suspension.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh is confident the MP4-28 has worked around last year's errors and expects a stronger season. He also added the largely uncharged rules for this year call for most teams to feature revised cars.
Jenson Button was optimistic on the McLaren MP4-28, describing it as "the best car we've (McLaren) ever made". He also added his new team mate Sergio Perez had room to improve as a driver in McLaren and more importantly an opportunity to shine with the MP4-28. Even Perez, a.k.a Checo, believes the team has done a wonderful job to make him feel at home with the legendary team.
"For me it has been incredible, so exciting. I've never been so excited - even when I came in to Formula One or anything else - it's really something special that I'm looking forward to the new season. It has been a very busy couple of months and we have done an incredible job with my engineers working together in the simulator to understand the car and I think if we can do the same in the next couple of days of testing to prepare myself for the first race we're going to have an incredible preparation," commented Perez.

The car will be piloted by Button and his new team mate - Mexican driver Sergio Perez - formerly from Sauber. The launch took place at its 'Zen like' McLaren Technology Centre with Button arriving in the upcoming McLaren P1 supercar while Perez arrived in a MP4-12C.
