Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its new performance models based on the GLE: The Mercedes-AMG GLE63 4MATIC+ and GLE63 S 4MATIC+.
The top-of-the-line of the model series is naturally taking to the starting line with state-of-the-art engine technology: The AMG 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine generates 563bhp and 603bhp in the S version and is combined for the first time with the EQ Boost starter-alternator, as well as the 48V on-board electrical system.
The engines will additionally feature new cylinder shut-off technology and a petrol particulate filter for optimum efficiency.
The 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine in the new GLE63 now combines a starter motor and an alternator in a single, powerful electric motor that is integrated between the engine and the transmission to save space. An additional 22bhp of output plus 250Nm of torque can now be called upon temporarily, enabling more spontaneous moving-off characteristics.
For the first time, the EQ Boost starter-alternator is also responsible for idle speed control. This will allow for fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology.
Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with cylinder deactivation. When under partial load, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which reduces fuel consumption. Mercedes-AMG promises a seamless transition between these two operating states, so that passengers do not have to relinquish any comfort.
Putting that power onto the road is an electromechanically controlled clutch that connects the permanently driven rear axle variably to the front axle, ensuring the best possible torque split between the axles by continuously adjusting drive according to the driving conditions and driver's input.
The standard AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension and the adaptively adjustable Adaptive Damping System have also been configured for the characteristics of an SUV.
They combine outstanding agility and excellent vehicle dynamics with maximum traction and superb day-to-day comfort. The damping characteristics can be preselected in three different stages, allowing a more obvious distinction between long-distance comfort and sporty vehicle dynamics.
In the interior, standard AMG seats are upholstered in nappa leather to provide optimum lateral support and feature an AMG-specific seat pattern layout with an 'AMG' badge in the front backrests.
Other leather variants are optionally available. Individually adjustable ambient lighting comes as standard, while the second seat row is optionally available with full electric adjustment.
AMG-specific interior appointments and controls also lend the cockpit a hallmark AMG atmosphere. The latest generation, three-spoke AMG performance steering wheel features aluminium shift paddles and will impress with its driver-oriented ergonomics.
In the base model the steering wheel is lined in black nappa leather, while in the S variant a nappa leather and DINAMICA microfibre combination is used. Further options include AMG steering wheel buttons for particularly fast operation of driving parameters.
