Mercedes-Benz and its E-Class lead local sales figures

Despite increasing COE premiums for almost half a year, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has replaced the smaller and more compact C-Class sedan as the most popular model here in 2013 from January through September. The podium position can be attributed to the recently launched facelift model of the E-Class - which gave the entire lineup (above) an all new front facia and mild changes to the rear with refined power plants.
"The makeover of the E-Class now appeals to both young and old buyers, and most of them view it as a brand new model even though it is already three years old," said the Sales Manager of a mid-sized dealership to The Business Times.
Additionally the local business daily believes the 1.6-litre equipped C-Class has lost its appeal after premiums for Cat A increased within the levels of Cat B premiums. At the end of the most recent exercise last week, Cat A premiums ended around $77,000 while Cat B premiums ended around $88,000.
The German marque remains as Singapore's top automaker with year-to-date new car registrations of 2,902 units ahead of BMW and Toyota - with 2,889 and 2,406 registrations each. The figures include both authorised and grey market imports - excluding taxis.
On the models' sales charts, the E-Class and C-Class sedans recorded 1,353 units and 1,086 units respectively ahead of competitor BMW's 5 and 3 Series with 1,206 and 948 units each. Among the top five automakers, Toyota is the only non-European marque with Mazda coming in at a distant seventh with 470 new cars registered after the first three quarters of 2013. Nissan trails behind in eight with 466 units while Hyundai round up the top ten with 378 units.
Overall only 17,102 new cars were registered from January to September, a reduction of 19 percent from the same period last year. The figure is on track to be the lowest in more than 15 years.
