Mercedes-Benz has presented its vision of the future of sustainable mobility with the VISION AVTR at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020.
Inspired by the film Avatar, the concept vehicle uses a revolutionary battery technology developed from graphene-based organic cell chemistry that is completely free of rare earths and metals. The materials of the battery are compostable and completely recyclable.
The VISION AVTR combines the design of the interior, exterior and user interface on an unprecedented scale. Its nature-inspired design language characterises the entire concept vehicle.
This is illustrated by the exterior's stretched, sporty 'one-bow' design, which merges with spherically pronounced wheelhouses, as well as the 33 multi-directionally movable flaps on the back of the vehicle.
On the interior, the VISION AVTR also seeks to deliver an immersive experience space and to convey a completely new user experience. The seats of the VISION AVTR are made from vegan DINAMICA leather, while the floor is decorated with an innovative fast-growing Rattan wood from Indonesia.
A menu selection projected onto the palm of the hand allows the passenger to intuitively choose between different functions, allowing the driver to choose between different perspectives to explore the fictional film world Pandora from Avatar, for example.
Another highlight of the VISION AVTR is its control unit. Capable of recognising the driver by his or her heartbeat and breathing, the multifunctional control element in the centre console also allows the driver to intuitively control the vehicle by simply placing his hand on the controls as long as he does not want to travel autonomously.
A new drivetrain also not only allows the car to move forwards and backwards, but also diagonally. In contrast to conventional vehicles, the VISION AVTR can move sideways by about 30 degrees. This so-called 'crab movement' gives the concept vehicle a reptile-like appearance and a high agility in its movement.
