Mercedes-Benz owners in Germany will now be able to make payments for their fuel all via the MBUX infotainment system, so they won't need to join the queue at the checkout area of the petrol station. The new move comes thanks to a collaboration with Mastercard that introduces in-car payments at the point of sale.
The new Mercedes me Fuel and Pay service is said to automatically start once a driver reaches a connected service station and switches off the engine. Once stated, the driver simply needs to select the appropriate pump, and the system will calculate the maximum amount chargeable based on the current fuel price and the amount of fuel left in the vehicle's tank. And once refuelling is complete, the driver can complete the transaction seamlessly through fingerprint authentication via the MBUX system.
The amount of fuel purchased and the invoice amount will additionally be displayed on the MBUX system, and payment will be made automatically via a Mastercard and Visa credit or debit card paired to the Mercedes me user account, so the driver will be able to leave the gas station without having to join a queue for payment. The invoice will be sent to the customer via an email.
The Mercedes me Fuel and Pay contactless payment is said to be already available in over 3,600 gas stations in Germany. Mercedes-Benz intends to roll out fingerprint payments from the car for other vehicle-related services and to other European markets in due time.
