Alexander Graham Bell is commonly attributed to the saying, "when one door closes, another one opens". Well, it now looks like MINI has closed the doors to its multi-door model as it gears up to introduce its new all-electric family.
The firm has announced that the last MINI Clubman has rolled off the production line at Plant Oxford, 55 years after the model's debut in 1969. The model is said to have attained global recognisability thanks to its unique styling and signature split rear doors.
First reborn in 2007, the Clubman was not only the first MINI to offer five seats, but also came with a unique Clubdoor that was hinged at the rear, and asymmetrically positioned on the one side of the car.
The model also saw a third generation launched in 2015, which came with four full-sized doors and an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, alongside an electric parking brake and full electric seat adjustment, all firsts for the MINI brand. The MINI Clubman All-4, launched in 2016, was also the brand's first all-wheel drive model.
MINI states that more than 1.1 million examples of the MINI Clubman models have been built, with half of these made at MINI Plant Oxford. The model saw a final 1,969 examples built as Final Edition models, all featuring Shimmer Copper exterior elements alongside exclusive 'Final Edition' badging both on the exterior and in the cabin.
The firm had announced a few weeks prior that the reveal of the new, all-electric MINI Aceman is now imminent.
