More MRT trains for North-South and East-West lines

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has announced on Tuesday that the North-South and East-West MRT lines will receive 29 more trains, on top of the 41 additional trains announced last year. This move will expand the fleet by up to 40 percent to 198 trains by 2019.
The LTA said more trains will ease crowding on the MRT lines, which are some of the most heavily-utilised in Singapore. The larger train fleet will also allow for better maintenance turnover and helps upgrading works.
The additional trains will also help to meet the higher ridership demands of the MRT network when it is expanded, such as the Tuas West Extension on the East-West Line and when the new Canberra station on the North-South Line opens.
