New ministerial appointments
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced in a statement earlier this morning that Mr. Iswaran has resigned from his position as minister, member of parliament for West Coast, and from the People's Action Party (PAP). The resignation was submitted to Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, on Tuesday (16 January).
In a separate statement, PMO announced Mr. Chee Hong Tat’s promotion to full minister, along with his appointment as Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance.
Ms. Grace Fu, who helms the portfolio as Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, will take on the concurrent role as Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations. Prior to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) probe, Mr. Iswaran oversaw trade relations.
The charges
Mr. Iswaran was read two charges of corruption under the Prevention of Corruption Act, and one of obstructing justice, in court today. The remaining 24 charges pertained to the receipt of valuable items as a public servant, under the Penal Code.
Mr. Iswaran is accused of obtaining over $166,000 worth of flights, hotel stays, and event tickets in exchange for advancing the business interests of property tycoon, Mr. Ong Beng Seng. Mr. Ong owns the rights to the Singapore Grand Prix and is the chairman of Singapore GP.
Mr. Iswaran also allegedly obtained about $218,000 worth of valuable items in his dealings with Mr. Ong and his company, while serving as minister and chairman of the F1 Steering Committee.
In rejecting these allegations, Mr. Iswaran had informed Prime Minister Lee that he would "return all monies received through his salary as minister and allowances as MP from the commencement of the CPIB’s investigations in July 2023".
Mr. Iswaran was taken into custody by CPIB on 11 July 2023, to assist in an investigation into a case uncovered by the agency.
