Subaru introduced its all new iconic performance flagship model, the WRX STI, at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit - housing a 2.5-litre turbocharged Boxer engine with Dual Active Valve Control System (Dual AVCS). The engine is exclusive to the STI model and produces 305bhp at 6,000rpm and 392Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm - linked to a specially reinforced six-speed manual transmission.
The body utilises greater use of high-tensile steel and features special stiffening elements at key locations for quicker steering response - that was benchmarked against top handling sports cars.
The 2015 WRX STI, features Active Torque Vectoring along with other handling technologies that includes Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD) Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control, and a Performance Brake System with Super Sport ABS - courtesy of Brembo.
The Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) powertrain management system allows the driver to tailor the car's driving characteristics by choosing among three selectable modes - Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp - via the rotary dial on the centre console.
The cabin is bold, with new Alcantara seating surfaces highlighted by red and black leather bolsters and red stitching. The new model debuts a flat bottom steering wheel and new performance inspired front seats with height and tilt adjustable head restraints. Also new is a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
The longer wheelbase aids in providing a roomier cabin in the new model, with rear seat legroom increased by nearly 50mm, while a standard 60/40-split fold down rear seat extends versatility.
Along with the WRX STI, Subaru will offer a 1,000 unit limited WRX STI Launch Edition exclusive to the American market. All Launch Edition models will be painted WR Blue Pearl and come equipped with gold painted 18-inch BBS alloy wheels. The Launch Edition is exclusively equipped with special interior colours and trim and gets a standard STI Short-Throw Shifter for the six-speed manual transmission along with a standard fitted keyless Access & Start system.
