On 22 June, BMW Motorrad Singapore previewed the new R 12 and R 12 nineT models ahead of their official local market launch.
Succeeding the original R nineT launched in 2013 (check out a review here!), the new R 12 nineT and R 12 carries forward the same spirit of combining classic design with modern technology.
Both the R 12 (left) and R 12 nineT (right) models use a newly developed one-piece trellis bridge steel frame
The centrepiece of the new R 12 models is the newly developed one-piece trellis bridge steel frame with bolt-on rear section, which results in reduced weight, as well as a cleaner and more classic appearance. Within that frame sits the beating heart - an air/oil-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine that delivers 94bhp and 110Nm of torque in the R 12, and 108bhp and 115Nm of torque in the more performance-focused R 12 nineT. A newly-designed "Twin Pipe” exhaust system enhances the boxer soundtrack.
Both models also come with 45 mm upside down front forks (adjustable on R 12 nineT), as well as BMW Motorrad Paralever rear suspension with pre-load adjustment. In addition, Dynamic Traction Control and Engine Drag Torque Control improve riding safety, while a variety of riding modes offer a range of dynamic adjustments to the bikes.
As the more performance-oriented variant, the R 12 nineT gets a more powerful boxer engine, as well as an adjustable upside down front fork
The R 12 is positioned as the more easy-going cruiser, so it features a more classic teardrop shape, a steel tank, and a more relaxed riding position thanks to a lower seat height (754mm) and wider handlebars.
The R 12 nineT is slightly more athletic in demeanour, which is reflected in its design. It features an aluminium tank (30mm shorter to created a more front-oriented seating position compared to its predecessor) with brushed and clear-coated side panels, while the higher seat height (795mm) and tail-hump create a rising, dynamic line.
The model range offers plenty of customisation, such as a 3.5-inch micro TFT display, as well as a host of paint options
Of course, both models are offered with an extensive range of optional equipment. For example, the analogue gauge(s) can be replaced by a 3.5-inch micro TFT display, and the optional Connected Ride Control adds a Bluetooth interface through which you can connect your phone via the BMW Motorrad Connected app. This would also allow you to use the Multi-Controller on the left handlebar to conveniently control the app without taking your hands off the handlebar. There are also a range of aesthetic upgrades, including the Option 719 packages that further enhance the classic feel of these models.
The new R 12 and R 12 nineT are both expected to be officially launched in Singapore some time next month.
