New Slate truck launches with "Metamorphmagus" promise

Harry Potter fans will be familiar with the term "Metamorphmagus". For the muggles, it is a witch or wizard with the rare ability to alter their physical appearance at will. And the way Slate talks about their new all-electric pickup truck, it might well just be that.
When one thinks of pickup trucks, a sizeable chassis, two-door cabin, and an open loading bed comes to mind. The Slate pickup truck ticks all those boxes bar one: If by sizeable you mean large, by modern standards, the truck is anything but.
Before the 4,435mm-long Slate came along, the 2025 Ford Maverick was touted as the smallest pickup on the market, measuring 5,075mm in length. But smaller means less space, right?
Not necessarily. The Slate's loading bed offers 1,048 litres of cargo space as compared to the Ford Maverick's 943-litres. And because its fully electric, it offers something the Maverick doesn't: A 198-litre frunk. Heck, maybe good things really do come in small packages.
Oh right, power. For all its positives, if the Slate pickup truck drives like a brick, even the most ardent petrolhead might struggle to sing its praises. Two battery choices are offered: A standard 52.7kWh option that offers 241km of range, and a bigger 84.3kWh option that offers 386km. Both will power a single 150kW (201bhp) motor on the rear axle which offers 264Nm of torque and a top speed of 145km/h.
And so begs the age-old question when it comes to any EV: How fast does it charge? It comes with an 11kW onboard charger that supports Level 2 AC charging, allowing the Slate pickup truck to go from 20% to 100% in under five hours. It also offers 120kW DC fast charging, allowing it to go from 20% to 80% in under 30 minutes.
Slate also uses the term "Blank Slate" to describe its new pickup, literally. Its not even painted, with customers having the option to wrap the vehicle however they desire. This also makes any future colour or design changes easier. Overthinkers, rejoice! The personalisation doesn't just stop there, with over 100 accessories, available either individually or bundled, allowing customers to doll up their pickup to the nines.
Smaller than a Honda Civic (no, really), the Slate channels its inner "Metamorphmagus" by being whatever you want it to be. Two-seater pickup to five-seater SUV? No problem. Squareback? Fastback? Check. Roof rack? Tower rack? Open air jeep style? Done. A bespoken choice for the masses, so to speak. Just don't wish for a Ferrari, yeah? Let's keep it real.
Oh, and it’s also only available in the United States of America. Sorry if you were dreaming of trundling down the East Coast Parkway shirtless with Riptide by Vance Joy blasting over the radio.
