Porsche has announced that it is upgrading its main plant in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.
The upgrades are designed to prepare the site to manufacture electric sports cars on top of the next generation 718 (catch our review of the Cayman GTS here). More than $365 million (€250 million) are set to be invested in the construction work for these updates.
A host of sports car production systems are set to get upgraded so as to increase the capacity and flexibility of the site. These upgrades include the use of automated guided vehicles at its two-door sports car production line. The new automated guided vehicles will replace the classic assembly line and enable a more variable production process that will be advantageous when mixed production of vehicles with combustion engines and electric powertrains are needed on the line.
Porsche states that the site will additionally get additional quality test benches for vehicle assembly. Not only have the test benches for leak and surface inspections been completely revamped, but the acoustic test benches have also been adapted to be able to test electric vehicles.
The site is also set to get additional logistics areas, and a new high-bay rack. The assembly line that will produce the electric powertrain of a future electric Macan is also being integrated into the existing engine plant at the site. The new generation of the Porsche Macan (catch our review of the current generation car here) is scheduled to roll off the production line at the Leipzig site in 2024.
