Almost 20 years after the iconic Porsche Carrera GT ceased production, the brand - with its long-term partner Michelin - has released new ultra-high-performance tyres for the super sports car.
Utilising the latest advancements in tyre technology, the rubber compound and the structure of the tyres have been revamped to enhance its performance in both wet and dry conditions.
Debuting in 2003, the Carrera GT was one of the fastest mass-produced cars. With a special V10 engine increasing its original displacement from 5.5 to 5.7 litres, maximum torque of 590Nm, and a 450kW (603bhp) output propelling its 1,380kg weight, the car has a top speed of 330km/h and goes 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds.
Originally fitted with bespoke Michelin tyres (Pilot Sport PS2), its first update was in 2013 with the Pilot Super Sport, which is now superseded by the newly developed Pilot Sport Cup 2 bearing Porsche's exclusive N-marking.
Porsche brand ambassador Korg Bergmeister explained that the development of the tyres, a process in which he was involved in, was to "further improve the driving dynamics and safety of the super sports car on both wet and dry roads."
To realise this goal, the Michelin team used two different rubber compounds (bi-compound technology) in the tread, with the inner compound helping with wet grip and the outer compound helping with dry grip.
The contact patch underwent stringent testing of driving dynamics and handling, with some tests conducted on the iconic Nurburgring Nordschleife, to create the ideal tyre for the Carrera GT.
The new tyres ensure even faster lap times on track and makes it easier for the car to be driven at speed. It also improves the car's braking distance, going from 100-0km/h in 28.5m, down 2.5m from an original distance of 31m.
The new tyres, developed in conjunction between Michelin, Porsche Classic, and the Porsche Development Centre in Weissach, can be ordered from Porsche Classic Partners or any Porsche Centre.
