Power trip and fire cause Bukit Panjang LRT to shut down

The Bukit Panjang LRT train service (BPLRT) was shut down on Monday evening due to a fire caused by a power trip. Transport operator SMRT worked through the night to recover the service, but did not succeed to resume train service on Tuesday morning.

Managing Director of SMRT Trains Lee Ling Wee explained in a statement that a power trip between Pending station and Jelapang station caused train services to be disrupted on the entire line.

As engineers worked to resume the service, the fire alarm went off at Senja station - at about 5:45pm. Smoke was reportedly seen in the station's plant room, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force was activated.

The fire was put out and no one was injured, but it damaged the power tie-breakers at Senja station.

SMRT deployed thirty buses for bridging services. As the BPLRT train service failed to resume on Tuesday morning, SMRT has continued providing free bus and bus bridging services.
