After more than a decade of absence, Proton is back in Singapore, and it's confident that its return now will be worth the wait for buyers.
The Malaysian manufacturer has done a lot of maturing since Singaporean drivers were last acquainted with its cars. The brand can now boast of a seven-model strong lineup in its domestic market, with the likes of the S70 sedan and the three-row X90 SUV leading their respective segments. Between 2018 and 2025, domestic sales have also increased nearly threefold. Look outwards, and Proton is making its presence felt too; it's found footing in nearly 20 export countries, and stands as Malaysia's leading automotive exporter.
The e.MAS 7 marks Proton's return to Singapore after more than a decade of absence, and is also its first global electric offering
Proton's vision for Singapore, however, is a bit more specific: Focused within the realm of full electrification. And so (as teased heavily beforehand), it's re-entering Singapore now with a fully electric SUV called the Proton e.MAS 7.
The car was officially launched at Mediapolis' Infinite Studios on Wednesday evening (17 September 2025), during which the first lucky Singaporean owners were handed their cars. While the e.MAS 7 may still be a new namesake here, it's already become Malaysia's bestselling EV this year, selling 6,000 units on homeground in just under nine months.
Straddling the compact to mid-sized territories, the e.MAS 7 stretches out at 4,615mm long, 1,901mm wide, and 1,670mm wide, giving it sizeable physical presence. All of this isn't for show too; it gets a generous wheelbase of 2,750mm, with its width and boxy shape aiding even further in boosting passenger space.
The e.MAS 7's 2,750mm wheelbase and wide body mean that space is generous in the second row; it also contains a grand total of 33 separate storage spaces
On the note of space, a charming idiosyncrasy worth highlighting is the fact that the e.MAS 7's interior contains 33 storage spaces for you to stow away items, designed to keep the cabin neat and organised. Arguably most interesting is a large drawer beneath the rear bench, which can carry a maximum load of 3.5kg.
The e.MAS 7 launches in Singapore in two variants: As the Prime (powered by a slightly smaller 49.52kWh battery) and the Premium (larger 60.22kWh battery; more generous equipment list). As standard, however, its cabin already feels sufficiently tech-y and well-finished. Up front, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is paired to a 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen.
A good spread of digitalisation is offered as standard, including this 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Step up to the Premium variant, and you'll get to enjoy goodies such as a 16-speaker Flyme sound system
Step up to the Premium variant, and even more goodies await, including ventilated and powered front seats, 256-colour ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof with a sunshade, and 16-speaker Flyme Sound System (of which two speakers are embedded within the driver's headrest). Also to be enjoyed on the Premium variant is a 13.8-inch heads-up display.
As you might already know, the e.MAS 7 stands as the product of Proton's close collaboration with Geely. The SUV is built atop of the latter's Global Modular Architecture (GMA) - a dedicated platform for electric vehicles (EVs) - and incorporates a wide breadth of technologies aimed at sharpening its performance and safety.
For starters, the e.MAS 7 is propelled by what has been dubbed a '12-in-1' electric motor, which puts out a healthy 160kW and 320Nm of torque regardless of which of the two available variants you go for. Integrating the necessary components so tightly, according to Proton, has allowed it maximise the motor's efficiency.
The reliance on Geely's AEGIS Short Blade Battery technology should ensure minimal downtime when juicing the e.MAS 7 back up. The battery is said to be able to maintain high charging speeds over an extended period of time, instead of peaking briefly at the declared maximum rate.
Hook the Prime and Premium variants up to an 80kW and 100kW DC charger respectively, and their batteries can go from a state-of-charge of 30-80% in just 20 minutes. The e.MAS 7 Prime's 49.52kWh already offers a decent WLTP-rated range of 345km in mixed conditions; step up to the Premium once again, and Proton states that the latter's 60.22kWh battery is good for a WLTP-rated 410km on a full charge - again, in mixed conditions. Based solely on city-driving, the e.MAS 7 Premium could cover an even more impressive 553km.
Proton is also underscoring the excellent safety credentials underpinning the GMA platform. The e.MAS 7 was recently put through its paces at ASEAN NCAP, and achieved a stellar 92.57 points (out of 100), which didn't just easily net it a five-star rating, but also gives it the honour of the highest standing score among all tested models.
On the tech front specifically, the SUV is also equipped with a full suite of Level 2 advanced driving assistance features as standard. Within this list, drivers can rely on systems such as Traffic Sign Recognition, Leading Vehicle Departure Alert and Door Open Warning, on top of the standard fare of Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring.
Compelling track record aside, however, Proton believes it has yet another good reason why Singaporean drivers should hop aboard its vision of electric mobility: Cross-border road trips promise to be anxiety-free, given the support network run by the brand in Malaysia.
In particular, the first 99 Singaporean e.MAS 7 owners will be entitled to the Founders Edition Package, which unlocks benefits like roadside assistance across both Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia; five years worth of cross-border data roaming that can power features within the car's infotainment system, such as its real-time navigation map; and finally, a 10-year unlimited mileage battery warranty.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton, proffered that arriving slightly later to the scene can actually have its advantages; it's given Proton the time and space to refine the right sort of vision and company culture that will now help to sustain its success over the coming years.
The Proton e.MAS 7 is now on sale in Singapore, with launch prices starting at $175,888 (including a Category B COE) for the entry-level Prime variant.
