LTA has revealed there is an increase in the number of drivers caught for having illegal or decorated licence plates fitted to their cars. It is surprising to learn most driver's whom were caught were not aware their licence plates to be illegal. Some of plates either had wrong font face, improper font sizes, or were too reflective. Some others come with blue LED lights.
According to LTA, the monthly figures for drivers caught for breaching the rules have doubled in nearly two years. There were 242 monthly cases in 2010, 335 in 2011 and 542 monthly cases for the first eight months this year.
According to LTA guidelines, licence plates should have letters and figures that are 70mm high, 50mm wide and 10mm broad. Two colour schemes are used, either black on white(front) with black on yellow(rear) or the older white on black scheme. The typeface used is commonly Charles Wright. The penalty for breaking the rule is a fine up to S$1,000 or a jail term up to three months.
