Dennis, who is excited to return, added there will be key changes at McLaren next month.
While the fate of Martin Whitmarsh has not been discussed, the (re)appointment of Dennis comes as McLaren suffered their first season without a podium finish in Formula One since the 1980s.
According to British tabloid, Daily Telegraph, Dennis received a standing ovation from McLaren staff after he made the announcement of his return, while a number of them took to Twitter to express their delight.
"My fellow shareholders have mandated me to write an exciting new chapter in the story of McLaren, beginning by improving our on-track and off-track performance. Over the coming weeks I intend to undertake a thorough and objective review of each of our businesses with the intention of optimising every aspect of our existing operations, whilst identifying new areas of growth that capitalise on our technologies, and where appropriate further investing in them", Dennis explained.
It is unlikely Ron Dennis will oversee the team's day-to-day operations, and as soon as news of Dennis' appointment went public - Ross Brawn's name has been touted. Brawn left Mercedes AMG at the end of 2013, and is currently not attached to a team.
