Trademark Saab design features, such as the grille and sweeping waistline are prominent, while changes from the concept are minor, and are restricted to details such as the smaller front fog light openings, mirror caps, tail lamp colours and smaller 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, Saab has equipped the 9-4X with features such as eight-way power seats, wood trim or faux carbon fibre in the Aero, mesh-style air vents, and a centre console-mounted push-button ignition. Options available include power-adjustable pedals, a Bose audio system, GPS navigation with an eight-inch touch screen, tri-zone climate control, and a rear entertainment system.
Saab will offer a choice of two engines for the 9-4X. The first is a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre V6 unit with direct injection which produces 265bhp and 302Nm of torque. The other engine underpins the 9-4X Aero model, and is a 2.8-litre V6 with a twin-scroll turbocharger and produces 300bhp and 400Nm of torque.
Both engines come with adaptive six-speed automatic gearboxes, and the 3.0-litre version also comes with the option of Saab's XWD all-wheel-drive system, which varies torque between the front and rear axles, while an electronically-controlled limited-slip differential (eLSD) can transfer up to 50% of the torque to the rear wheel with the most traction.
Saab's CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said, "The 9-4X significantly broadens the appeal of the Saab brand. It gives us entry to the fast-growing crossover segment with a vehicle that reflects our brand values in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design and sporty, responsible driving performance. The 9-4X is an exciting package and we're confident it will appeal to many existing Saab owners, as well as win new customers for the brand."
The Saab 9-4X will be officially unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show next month, and go on sale in America from May of next year. Europe and other markets can expect to receive the car from August 2011, and Saab will release more details early next year.
