Satellite-based road pricing found feasible for Singapore

A satellite road pricing system has undergone two years of tests and trials and found to be feasible for Singapore.
Based on satellite positioning, the system can be used to charge motorists according to the distance travelled.
However, Transport Minister, Mr Lui Tuck Yew, has ruled out the implementation of such system in the near future. He also reassured that the new system is not likely to levy a heavier charge than the current Electronic Road Pricing (ERP).
The comment came during Mr Lui's visit to the Marina Coastal Expressway, which will be opened by year end.
Speaking at the visit, Mr Lui explained that the Government has no intention of implementing a blanket charge for road use. This came as a reply to concerns that motorists will have to pay for road usage as soon as they leave their house.
The satellite system also has the capability to provide other services, such as tracking of stolen vehicles and help in disseminating traffic information.
