Skoda has reached a new production milestone, having built over 500,000 battery systems for the Volkswagen Group vehicles.
The battery systems include those used in the Volkswagen Group's MEB vehicles, as well as those with plug-in hybrid drivetrains, and appear in vehicles from brands including Audi, Seat, and Volkswagen.
Skoda states that the battery systems are built at its headquarters in Mlada Boleslav, at a facility that spans roughly 2,000m2 and staffed by 50 employees per shift. The facility makes use of a total of 13 automated robots to handle the batteries, which can weigh up to 130kg when they are unloaded from the production line.
Each battery module can contain anywhere from 16 to 24 cells, and each battery system comes with its own integrated cooling and a management system. Skoda states it will be commissioning another MEB assembly line in 2023, which will increase its total production volume to 2,300 units per day, consisting of 1,500 MEB units per day, and 800 units for plug-in hybrid battery systems.
