Transport operator SMRT plans to add 700 Toyota Prius Hybrid taxies by the first quarter of next year. The move will double the operator's fleet of such taxis to 1,300.
After the addition, a third of the company's entire fleet of 3,800 taxis will be made up by these eco-friendly ones, including its current 99 Hyundai Azeras.
The first batch of 600 Prius Hybrid taxis were introduced in October 2013, and the next batch of 400 will begin service by the end of September.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr. Benny Lim, Managing Director of SMRT Roads, said the new taxis will offer passengers "quieter and smoother rides" while being more eco-friendly at the same time.
