Every year, the Tokyo Auto Salon showcases one of the world’s widest ranges of tuner exhibits. Toyota, being the leading car-maker in the country, is naturally the choice of many tuners to base their projects on.
For starters, GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by MN) has picked the iQ and Yaris. The iQ supercharged is actually the 2nd-generation prototype. Power-plant is an enhanced version of a supercharged 1.33 litre engine, first found in the 1st-gen prototype, delivering 128hp and 180Nm, and coupled to a six-speed close ratio transmission. Other performance upgrades include bigger brakes, sports-tuned suspension and a dual-exhaust system.
The iQ also gets a new full-body kit, including a rear spoiler. Bucket-seats, reworked interior instrumentations and 16-inch Enkei alloys complete the cosmetics package.
The other car at the GRMN stand is a Turbo concept based on the three-door Yaris (Vitz in Japan), sporting a 178hp 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with track-prepared suspension, up-rated brakes and 18-inch alloys.
The new GT 86 is arguably the star of the Auto Salon, with various Japanese tuners showcasing their souped-up version of the new Toyota / Subaru developed sports car, with TRD and Modellista among the first few.
The TRD Performance Line GT 86 features a revised suspension system with new front and rear anti-roll bars. List of modifications include carbon front strut, rear diffuser, additional cross-bracing and a new exhaust system with quad tailpipes. In the visual section TRD fitted a full body kit, new 18-inch alloys and sports seats, not forgetting new instrument dials. Similarly, Modelista has fitted the GT 86 with a new body kit, offering a variety of individualisation programs for the coupe.
