Science fiction comes to life with Toyota innovation

If you've seen Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which was released in 2018, you may recall a scene in which the nephews of Claire Dearing, one of the movie's main protagonists, are sightseeing on the park grounds in a spherical mobility device.
In 2024, this reality came to life, as the Toyota Engineering Society, a volunteer group at Toyota Motor Corporation, took on the challenge of attempting to create a spherical mobility device very much like the one seen in the aforementioned film.
This innovation works on the same principle as a hamster wheel: Rails are laid on the inside of the sphere, and when a wheeled cart runs on them, the sphere rotates and moves forward.
To achieve this, the engineers sought help from Shinshi, a specialised plastic board manufacturer of and acrylic processor, to construct the body of the sphere. After initial difficulties, the persistence of both parties triumphed, and the sphere was unveiled at an event in October 2024 to much fanfare.
On 31 March 2025, Toyota released a YouTube video detailing the whole process from start to finish, enabling viewers to appreciate the engineers' day-to-day efforts. The video can be found via this link.
