The Cars and Stars of ROC
28 Dec 2012|4,569 views
A total of seven cars formed the lineup for this year's Race of Champions, which was held over the past weekend in Bangkok, Thailand.
Sporting some of the world's best drivers in various fields of motorsports, these cars aim to provide a levelled competing ground, putting the drivers' skills and instincts to test.
Besides a spectacular showcase of driving talents, the event also put up splendid displays of stunt driving and riding by some of the best in the fields, including Chris Pfeiffer and Terry Grant.
The Audi S1 - the very first car which brought Audi's quattro four-wheel drive system to rallying, also made a guest appearance, piloted by Swedish rally legend Stig Blomqvist. In addition, the LFA which was race prepped to contest in this year's 24-Hour Nurburgring, was also present to give a drift demonstration. Jump to the gallery to catch a glimpse of them in action.
ROC Car
Styled very much like a buggy, the ROC car is home built and designed specifically for the event. Red lined at 9500rpm, the 1.1-litre engine pushes out 170bhp - a potent force if you consider the 475kg weight. The constrained dimensions, coupled with low weight and more than adequate power on tap, makes the ROC car one of the most fun to pilot in the series.
Engine: 1,100cc
Power: 170bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed sequential
KTM X-Bow
The X-Bow was developed with the tracks in mind, feeling right at home at the ROC. Capable of dispatching the century sprint in under four seconds, the X-Bow has gained a tough reputation among its drivers - one that begets respect, but will reward accordingly if driven with the right attitude and passion. It gets its 2.0-litre four-cylinder heart from Audi.
Engine: 1,984cc
Power: 240bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed manual
Volkswagen Scirocco
Clad in proper racing outfit, the Scirocco is in its element around the ROC circuit - no different from the bigger and more powerful rivals.
Besides starring in its one-make race series, the Scirocco has made its presence in international races such as the 24-Hour of Nurburgring. Its close relativity with the road car makes it a perfect platform to test out the best in its pilots, for novice and experienced drivers alike.
Engine: 1,984cc
Power: 200bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed automatic
Toyota 86
Studded with TRD bits, the Toyota 86 was one of the cars to look out for on the track - be it taking the apex with ease and grace, or drifting through the corners, locking its front wheels in the opposite direction. With just 200bhp from its 2.0-litre flat-four engine, the 86 may lack in outright pace. But its linearity and neutral handling gave it an edge - both in terms of performance and dynamic driving experience.
Engine: 1,998cc
Power: 197bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed sequential
Audi R8 LMS
Fans of endurance racing will find the R8 LMS a familiar face. Based on the R8 supercar, the R8 LMS was designed with GT3 racing in mind, and built to fit the specifications of FIA GT3 championships. Holding true to its four-ringed badge, the R8 LMS' pace and reliability turned it into a formidable contender in races worldwide.
Engine: 5,200cc
Power: 525bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed paddle shift
Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo
The race prepared Gallardo LP560-4 features a reworked chassis, and a 5.2-litre V10 powerplant with direct injection. Coupled with the dry weight of just 1,300kg, the Super Trofeo is a rebel on the tracks in the right hands. The Gallardo Super Trofeo one-make race is also one of the fastest single manufacturer series in the world.
Engine: 5,204cc
Power: 570bhp
Gearbox: Six-speed e-gear
Euro Racecar
Based around the same cars used for the American NASCAR race series, the Euro Racecar boasts the largest engine capacity in the ROC lineup. The 5.7-litre V8 gives out a distinctive howl that no others on the track could match up to. While these tarmac burners may look brutal and inorganic to the twisty track of ROC, they proved to be just as potent in the hands of these experienced drivers.
Engine: 5,700cc
Power: 450bhp
Gearbox: Four-speed H-pattern
