During a digital world premiere, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its new entry-level model to the all-electric world of Mercedes-EQ vehicles - the brand new EQA.
With the GLA-Class accounting for 10% of Mercedes-Benz sales in 2020, the compact car market has proven to be a key segment for the brand. Building on the successful format of the GLA, the new EQA brings all electric driving to the compact car sector, along with a host of technological features to agument the electric experience.
Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing and Sales, tells us, "Electrification share (including EVs and PHEVs) accounted for 7.4% of total sales in 2020. We believe we can double this to 13% in 2021. With the EQA entering the market early in 2021, obviously it will be key in increasing EQV sales this year, and it will be a very important portion of our EQ sales in 2021."
Leading this electric charge in 2021 is the brand new EQA, the first of four new EQ models to be unveiled in 2021.
The EQA features the black panel radiator grille with central star that is the hallmark of Mercedes-EQ, as well as the continuous light strip at the front and rear. A horizontal fibre-optic strip connects the daytime running lights of the full-LED headlamps, while blue colour highlights within the headlamp reinforce the signature Mercedes-EQ appearance. At the rear, LED taillamps merge seamlessly into the tapered LED light strip. Also, exclusive to this model are light-alloy wheels in a bi or tri-colour design, up to 20 inches in size, in some cases with rosé gold-coloured or blue decorative trim.
The interior of the EQA delivers plenty of typical Mercedes-Benz luxury. Included as standard is the intuitively operated MBUX infotainment system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). Key advantages of the system include the powerful computer, brilliant screens and graphics, customisable presentation, full-colour head-up display (optional), navigation with augmented reality (optional), learning software and voice control activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes".
An indication of the electric character in the interior of the EQA is provided by a new-style back-lit trim element and rosé gold-coloured decorative trim on the ventilation outlets, seats and the vehicle key.

Adding to the general ease of using the EQA on a day-to-day basis is Navigation with Electric Intelligence, which comes as a standard feature. This calculates the fastest route to the given destination.
On the basis of continual range simulations, the system makes allowance for any necessary charging stops (in which the system will direct the driver to ther nearest charging station) as well as for numerous other factors, such as the topography and the weather. It is also able to react dynamically to changes, for instance in the traffic situation or personal driving style.
At launch, the EQA250 will be available, which features a 140kW electric motor that sends 375Nm of torque to the front wheels. With a 66.5kWh lithium-ion battery that uses a 'double-decker' design, the EQA250 has a total range of 426km.

At home or at public charging points, the on-board charger provides a convenient way of charging the EQA with up to 11kW using alternating current. The EQA can also be charged with a maximum output of up to 100kW at an appropriate direct current rapid charging station. The battery can be charged in this case from 10 to 80% in around 30 minutes.
Further variants of the EQA will be introduced in the future, including a more powerful all-wheel drive model, as well as a version with a range of more than 500km.
