Porsche is no stranger to electrification today.
Whether it's plug-in hybrid variants of the Cayenne or Panamera, its LMP (Le Mans Prototype) Hypercar, the 919 Hybrid, and in more recent times, even the record-breaking Taycan, electric power has slowly become an integral part of its brand identity.
Porsche is already no stranger to electrification today, with the fully electric Taycan, as well as plug-in hybrid variants of the Panamera and Cayenne in its lineup
Yet the single model that has yet to touch electrification amidst all this has been its defining model - until now, that is.
Speculation on a hybridised 911 has been rife for a while, but now, Porsche has officially confirmed that electrified variants of the iconic sports car will soon be unveiled.
The news was revealed as part of the brand's publishing of its 2023 Annual and Sustainability Report. Specifically, within a specific sub-section detailing the development of Porsche's drive systems over time, the brand recounts how each generation of the 911 has achieved a new milestone in drive technology - from introducing turbocharging, to pioneering the dual-clutch transmission in motorsport, to moving to water-cooled engines.
Now, it says that the next step - which is "just around the corner" for 2024 - is the 'ultra-sporty hybrid' 911. It's worth noting that it's not the entire 911 lineup that's getting hybridised (more than 20 variants exist, to jolt your memory), but only selected derivatives.
While purists may hold reservations about tinkering with the 911's pure-combustion formula, Porsche believes the progression to hybrid power is a natural next step - and fully in line with what the 911 has always represented.
According to Frank Moser, who manages the 911 and 718 model lines, the high-performance hybrid "seamlessly continues innovative development of the 911 drive", and provides Porsche with a technology that "will prepare [the brand] for future emissions standards". To those who remember, boosting power while reducing fuel consumption isn't a new remit for the 911. Back in 1997, the 996 911 had already worked to achieve this by adopting a water-cooled flat-six.
