However, Toyota has now released an official statement retracting that claim and clarifying its position on the RAV4 Electric Vehicle. The Japanese carmaker said, “Recent reports have incorrectly stated that the 2012 RAV4 EV will only be marketed to fleet and car sharing programs. We’d like to set the record straight. The 2012 RAV4 EV will definitely be sold to the general public. We anticipate robust public interest in the RAV4 EV and are keen to inform consumers that their future vehicle options include a battery electric Toyota.”
Toyota adds though, that another of its electric vehicle, the US-only Scion iQ pure-electric city car, will indeed be offered through lease programs to fleets and car-sharing schemes in the States, unlike the RAV4 EV.
It was reported by Reuters earlier this week that the upcoming RAV4 EV was to be made available for lease to fleets and through car sharing programs only in the United States starting from 2012, citing a quote from Geri Yoza, the National Business Planning Manager of Advanced Vehicle Marketing, as the source.
