Six stations around the city area will be operational under the first stage of the Downtown Line (DTL) comprising - Bugis, Promenade, Bayfront, Downtown, Telok Ayer and Chinatown. The stations will link with three other existing MRT lines - Circle Line (CCL), North East Line (NEL) and East West Line (EWL) in a bid to enhance connectivity within the city area.
The second and third stage of the massive 42km line is due to open in 2016, and in 2017 respectively.
The commencement date was announced by Transport Minister, Lui Tuck Yew, who was speaking at the opening ceremony of the inaugural Singapore International Transport Congress and Exhibition - jointly organised by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and International Association of Public Transport (UITP).
At the same event, Mr Lui unveiled the Land Transport Masterplan 2013 (LTMP) - a refreshed version to a similar plan that was laid out back in 2008 and lays out new initiatives to take Singapore's land transport forward to the next 10 to 15 years.
