Volkswagen raises the use of green energy at its plants
24 Jan 2020|1,105 views
Volkswagen has set itself further ambitious targets for 2020 in order to expand the percentage of externally sourced renewable energy at its plants.
The external supply of power at the Volkswagen brand's 16 plants around the world (excluding those in China) have already switched to utilising up to 70% green electricity from renewable sources. The company has now resolved to increase this figure to 90% within just one year. Volkswagen is also focussing on utilising natural gas for its own power generation and is switching its power plants in Wolfsburg from coal to gas.
The supply of power for production in Wolfsburg for example, is currently in the process of being switched to highly efficient combined cycle gas turbine plants. They will run in a cogeneration mode, allowing the CO2 emissions from generating electricity and heat to go down by 60%, or around 1.5 million tonnes a year, equivalent to the emissions of around 870,000 cars. The first of the components required for the conversion have already been delivered on site.
