Williams and Renault has had a rich history together, dating back to 1989, and the partnership resulted in four driver’s championships by Nigel Mansell in 1992, Alain Prost in 1993, Damon Hill in 1996 and Jacques Villeneuve in 1997. Williams-Renault also won five constructors’ titles in that time, in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997. The two companies also came up with the Renault Clio Williams road car back in 1992.
Renault currently builds its Formula One engines in Viry-Chatillon in the south of Paris, and the French manufacturer has won a total of nine constructors titles overall as an engine supplier, the most recent being with the Red Bull Racing team in 2010 at the hands of current Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
Williams and Renault Sport will collaborate in Formula One in the 2012 and 2013 seasons, the last seasons when the current V8 engines will be allowed in the sport, and Renault has an option to continue the partnership in 2014, when the new turbocharged V6 engines will be introduced into Formula 1.
