NISSAN SERENA
The new Serena e-Power is Nissan's interesting take on a hybrid vehicle - it utilises a 1.2-litre engine as a generator, powering the batteries that in turn send current to the electric motor. Thus, with a traditional fuel tank rather than charging port, the Serena e-Power negates worries about long charging time and range anxiety.

Beyond that, the Serena delivers plenty in the way of MPV practicality. With seven seats, ample storage options and practicality-focused elements like a dual opening tailgate, the Serena is fully capable of meeting the needs of the whole family.

The Nissan e-POWER is the first in what will be a growing lineup of e-POWER models from Nissan, and showcases the brand's individual approach to hybrid technology.

Unlike other parallel hybrids that use both the electric motor and petrol engine to drive the wheels, the Serena's 1.2-litre petrol engine instead only acts as a generator, powering the batteries that in turn send current to the electric motors.

By having just the electric motors driving the wheels, you get some unique benefits of electric driving, such as instant torque and serene operation, without the hassle of long charging times and range anxiety.

That said, the Serena isn't all technology and no functionality, either. Indeed, as family MPV, it performs well, boasting plenty of space and convenience features like the hand-free sliding doors. The dual opening tailgate is also another innovative feature, adding to the car's suite of convenience options.

Thanks to e-POWER technology, this big seven-seater MPV can also boast an impressive fuel economy figure of 15.2km/L. As Nissan looks to continue to electrify its lineup, the Serena e-POWER is indicative of an innovative yet practical way of doing so, and is thus the winner of this year's Hybrid category.
