At more than $15,000 cheaper than the other two rivals in its class, the Suzuki Swift is hard to ignore in this price sensitive segment. But, of course, this is not the only reason why it is the winner for the compact hatchback category in this year's COTY.
Launched in 2018, the Swift has managed to fend off newer rivals by still looking fresh and youthful. With a wheelbase that is longer and wider than its predecessor, the car is also usefully larger inside and is as spacious as its competitors.
Inside, one wouldn't expect a $70k plus car to be loaded with lots of goodies, but you will be surprised to find that it is fitted with automatic air-conditioning and paddle shifters. It also comes with other features usually found in bigger cars, such as Keyless entry, Automatic LED Headlamps and Electronic Stability Program.
The 'Swift' nameplate also evokes notions of sharp handling, keen driving and all-around fun. Like its predecessor, this new model contonually manages to delight drivers with its eager handling and playful nature. If you happen to go into a corner too fast, a quick lift off the throttle can prevent the car from snapping into wild oversteer, making for great fun for those who enjoy driving briskly. |
|
Cementing its reputation as a driver's tool is its willing turbocharged 1.0-litre engine that produces a decent 109bhp and 160Nm of torque, propelling the lightweight supermini to decent speeds better than some of its rivals. A useful side effect of weighing less than a ton also means that fuel consumption is low, with a claimed figure of 17.5km/L.
With so many things done right, it is hard to deny the Suzuki Swift the win. Oh, and did we mention it is quite a bit more affordable than its rivals? |

The new Mazda3 is available in both Sedan and Hatchback forms, but it is the latter that proves to be the most desirable. With a clean and simple design, shedding sharp lines for fluid, curvaceous forms, the Mazda3 Hatchback is extremely pleasing on the eye.
This minimalistic ethos also translates to the cabin – the clean and simple design of the dashboard, combined with good material choices all around, create an elevated sense of quality. Coupled with the new 8.8-inch infotainment system that is controlled via a rotary dial that produces a satisfying click when turned, the Mazda3's perceived quality is well on par with cars priced above its class.
.Sitting on a brand new platform, the new car is marginally shorter and lower than the one it replaces, but delivers more space on the inside thanks to intelligent packaging. Specifying the car in a lighter shade of interior trim also helps to accentuate the sense of spaciousness.
In an effort to make the car stiffer and safer, the Mazda3 has grown in weight. But that does not stop the hatchback from being the pick of its class in terms of handling. Feeling tight and agile in the turns, the Mazda3 demonstrates good body control, resisting roll almost as well a hot hatch. |
|
That is not to say that it will be uncomfortable for passengers who want a relaxing ride home. On the highway, the well-trimmed cabin is well isolated from the outside world, with barely any engine noise. Blessed with a ride that is mildly firm but never anywhere near harsh, the car balances good handling and comfort easily.
One of the main highlights of the car is a new 24V mild hybrid assistance that it paired to its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine. A rarity in this class, the mild hybrid system does not actually assist in powering the car, but instead helps power on-board components and lower fuel consumption. The mild hybrid system also ensures smoother engine start/stop – during our time in the car, the start/stop system proved to be pleasingly unobtrusive.
Excelling in so many ways, it is hard to ignore how well-rounded the Mazda3 is, thus prompting us to give it the nod in this hatchback category. |

MINI COOPER S 3-DOOR
Price: N/A | Distributor: Eurokars Habitat
|
|
|
When BMW took over and redesigned the MINI in the early 2000s, not everyone was sure that it would work. Now, nearly two decades later, the MINI is available with a five-door configuration, putting it into battle with many other well-established rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and recently launched BMW 1 Series Hatchback.
While not as pretty as MINI's three-door variant, the additional doors are a blessing in our market as most buyers will want the extra doors for the convenience. The doors, while small, open up to decently sized 2nd row seats that are able to accommodate full size adults easily.
Being a MINI, it does not disappoint with its driving dynamics. Sitting low, the car relishes turns and navigates them with aplomb. Thanks to nicely weighted and sharp steering, the car feels agile and responsive, with the suspension riding firmly but never crashy. |
|
Credit must also be given to MINI for putting such a large capacity engine into a small car. With the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine putting out a useful 280Nm of torque, the car feels muscular and flexible, and is able to pull with vigour once you get past 2,000rpm. Couple that with the new dual-clutch transmission that shifts seamlessly, and the MINI is a real weapon on the road.
Compared to its other rival in this class, the MINI Cooper S 5-Door is more interesting and more sporty, while still managing to be practical for everyday use. Thus, the car certainly deserves this year's Premium Hatchback award. |
|
|
This year's Hot Hatch category sees the MINI John Cooper Works fend off some fierce competition in the form of Renault's Megane RS and Hyundai's i30 N. While both the aforementioned cars are great cars in their own way, the MINI managed to charm us more with its playful and cheery character.
Being smaller in size, the JCW is easier to place on the road than its rivals. But, that doesn't mean that it is boring to drive. With an urgent 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the front, a displacement that is rare in a supermini amid today's downsizing trend, the car feels genuinely brisk and can keep up with all but the fastest of hot hatches on our roads.
Now blessed with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, gear shifts are also quicker and smoother than before. And when it is time to wind it down a little bit, the car can mimic a larger car with the tallest gear ratio calming the energetic car down. |
|
In the corners, the car remains an absolute hoot to drive. Like all proper hot hatches, you can tailor its angle of attack by lifting off midway into the turn and exiting with some throttle to point it where you want to go. Drive it neatly, the car resists understeer well and carry lots of speed too. Braking power is also stellar thanks to the four-pot Brembos upfront that resist fade well when used on the street.
Ticking all the boxes required for a hot hatch, the good-looking MINI John Cooper Works is well-deserving winner this year. |

There are not many instances where you can have your cake and eat it. But Seat has somehow managed to achieve it with its entrant in this year's Sedan category. In a segment where value for money is a key consideration, the Toledo stands out for being the only European model contending within this category.
As part of the Volkswagen stable of brands, Seat is marketed as the more exuberant and stylish arm - you can see from the Toledo's angular lines and sharpened styling that is bolder than the equivalent Skoda or Volkswagen sedans.
Moving inside, the Toledo will win fans with its impressive cabin space. Despite having the front seats pushed further back than usual, rear legroom still manages to accommodate tall adults. The boot also delivers an impressive 550 litres of space, more than some of its competitors such as the Hyundai Avante. |
|
Like most other cars in its class, it also packs all the infotainment features you'd come to expect for a new car, such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto as well as USB connectivity.
Priced very competitively (under $80k at press time) and probably the most affordable European model in the market, it is hard to ignore the Seat Toledo as the best all round sedan. |

MAZDA 6
Price: $216,888 - $221,888 | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda)
|
|
|
Admittedly, the Mazda6 is not the newest entrant to the Family Sedan class, with the first variant of this third generation Mazda6 appearing on our review pages in 2013. Having gone through four comparison tests since then and emerging victorious most of the time, you know that the car is still at the top of its game after all these years.
Now in its third round and the most significant of facelifts, the Mazda6 still looks fresh as compared to its other key rival in the class, the Toyota Camry. The new head and taillights, a sharper grille and new bumpers all contribute to the car's sleeker look.
Inside, a new 8.0-inch infotainment system has been added, which allows you to access a new 360-degree parking camera. The instrument cluster has also been digitalized, and in the higher specification trim levels, the front seats are also ventilated, a handy feature in our humid climate. As a family sedan, the Mazda6 also delivers ample space to comfortable accommodate five adults.
Being a major facelift, there are mechanical changes too. Highlights include cylinder deactivation technology for the 2.5-litre engine, as well as a slight bump in power to 192bhp and 258Nm of torque. |
|
Safety wise, the top variants also get features like the Lane-Keep Assist System, Advanced Smart City Brake Support and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to assist the driver in times of emergency.
Of course, being a Mazda, it is also one of the best-handling family sedan out there on the market. The engine is punchy and responsive, steering is sharp and accurate, and the car demonstrates excellent body control through corners.
Considering all qualities that this facelifted Mazda6 demonstrates, it's not hard to see why it emerges victorious in its class. Need more evidence of its continued eminence? This is the Mazda6's fifth win in this category since 2015. |

The BMW 3 Series is the poster boy of the compact executive sedan segment. Now in its seventh generation, the car is bigger, has a more premium-looking interior and is loaded with technology.
The 3 Series has grown, and the stretched proportions mean that rear passengers now get 11mm more headroom. Legroom, as well as shoulder room have been increased all around as well.
There is more practicality added to the mix, with enough space for massive smartphones, tablets and enough USB ports.
The 3 Series also sports a much cleaner and fresher dashboard layout. Improvements here include a new fully-digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster and 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display. With it comes BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant – a voice activated assistant that operates and explains various functions of the car. |
|
While the 3 Series has grown up, it hasn't lost its appeal behind the wheel, either. Body control is excellent, and it handles with a keenness that brings to life that all-familiar BMW dynamism.
There is enthusiasm and confidence about the way it moves that is rarely displayed by its equivalent rivals. Behind the wheel, you consistently feel excited yet thoroughly confident about the car's road-holding capabilities.
The linearity in which the 330i variant delivers its 254bhp and 400Nm of torque, and the flawlessness of its transmission shifts, also set standards in its class.
With it, BMW has certainly ensured that the 3 Series continues the legacy of its predecessors, and that it remains to be the poster boy of the compact executive sedan segment. |

AUDI A6 SEDAN
Price: $314,999 | Distributor: Audi Singapore Pte Ltd
|
|
|
For a long time, the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class have been the executive sedans of choice in Singapore. But now, the Audi A6 has taken the throne.
Its bold and athletic sheet metal hides a cabin that is the best in the business. The intricate mix of aluminium and leather exudes high quality, and is thoughtfully put together. Nestled in this mix are two touch-sensitive display screens, controlling infotainment and vehicle functions.
And perhaps its most winning formula is how it drives. With a stiffened chassis, combined with the standard adaptive dampers, the A6 takes on pockmarked roads with relative ease, offering a cushy and premium ride once only offered by Mercedes. |
|
Driver assistance features such as active cruise control and lane keep assist work even at low speeds and in traffic. That helps in making the driving routine a little more relaxing.
As far as executive sedans go, the A6 excels in ways that really matter. It is comfortable, premium and very well put together. |

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS-CLASS
Price: N/A | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Industries

|
The winner this year goes to the car that started the four-door coupe trend – the Mercedes-Benz CLS.
Truly a car that encompasses the brand's design language of sensual purity, the CLS carries a strong yet fluid coupe-like silhouette, and is highly appealing.
It is just as appealing on the inside. The CLS offers a very premium interior that is technologically advanced. The two 12.3-inch displays are a visual treat, and offer various infotainment functions that can be customised to your liking.
Elsewhere, there is a high level of attention to detail. Fit and finish is superb, and combined with the 64-colour ambient lighting, the CLS is perhaps one of the nicest cars to be in. There is a higher level of practicality in the new CLS, with a rear bench that can now sit three compared to two in the last generation. |
|
Plus, it has the pace to match its looks. The CLS450's turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six pushes out a healthy 362bhp and 500Nm of torque to all four wheels, offering a brisk 4.8 second century sprint timing. And with a mild-hybrid EQ Boost system, up to 250Nm of torque can be dispatched immediately, without any lag.
The Mercedes-Benz CLS is very much a car that is about looking and feeling good. In this new generation, it adds practicality and performance, without losing its appeal as a pretty sweet four-door coupe. |

The current generation BMW 7 Series has received a timely update, and has come out on top once again for the Luxury Sedan segment.
With this facelift, the car comes with a bigger and bolder look. In a class where a car has to have an impact, the 7 Series certainly has what it takes. Exaggerated the kidney grille may be, the 7 Series is more unified in design than any of its peers.
Improved comfort is what the facelifted 7 Series offers. The car now comes with improved sound insulation around the rear wheel arches and has thicker glass windows – all for the purpose of enhanced comfort and a quieter ride.
Adding on to that is an updated interior befitting of the 7er's flagship sedan status. From its Nappa leather seats and the new trimming on the dashboard to the fully digital cluster and infotainment screen, everything in here exudes the refinement and extravagance that is befitting of royalty. |
|
There is also a higher level of sophistication in the way the 7 Series behaves on the road. It is polite and refined, but is capable of turning in keenly with lots of feel and feedback from the steering wheel. Yet, it isn't a hard car to pilot despite its size, and feels nimble and easy to place even in tight spaces.
Plus, with a suite of safety assistance features like Lane Keep Assist, Active Cruise Control and Blind Spot Monitoring, there is no reason to be overwhelmed whilst driving.
With its bold looks, comfortable ride and an easy drive, the 7 Series leaves a big impact in a segment where strong impressions matter the most. |

If you are looking for manic AMG properties in a four-door, the answer is the AMG GT 4-Door.
This is the four-door, five-seater, family-friendly version of the AMG GT. It only takes one glance for you to know this is a performance vehicle, as it carries all the cues of an AMG car – massive air intakes and Panamericana grille included.
Inside, the AMG GT 4-Door is surprisingly sensible and practical. It is steeped in equipment, with two 12.3-inch screens that form into a large widescreen cockpit. Beyond that, is it still a lavish cabin we've come to expect from Mercedes.
As a grand tourer, it manages to be comfortable, too. The AMG GT 4-Door gets massage seats, ambient lighting, and a highly customisable infotainment system.
It remains to offer a decent level of practicality. You get three seats in the rear, and a sizeable boot of 360 litres, with 60 litres more underneath the boot floor. |
|
And do not forget performance, for the AMG GT 4-Door has it. The 53 model is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight six that makes 429bhp and 520Nm of torque to all four wheels.
It is a delight when driven hard. Power is doled out immediately and rapidly. Combined with its sharp, communicative steering and a well-balanced chassis, there is no doubting that it is a serious performance car.
If you want to turn down the fun, the GT 4-Door is still capable of doing the whole comfort shebang. In its most comfortable settings, the car potters down the road quietly, unfazed by bumps and undulations.
The AMG GT 4-Door ticks a lot of the right boxes. It handles well, it's comfortable, and, most importantly, it still has the genuine AMG DNA, whilst still being quintessentially Mercedes. |

Here is the RS-badged car that doesn't come with a heavy price tag – the Skoda Octavia RS 245.
For something that sits in its current price tag, it offers performance that rivals fabled hot hatches like the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Renault Megane RS.
For starters, it makes more power than the GTI. Its 2.0-litre turbocharged motor produces a healthy 241bhp and 370Nm of torque, allowing the RS 245 to complete the century sprint in 6.4 seconds.
One special feature that the RS 245 has is the fact that it comes with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential. Put it through its paces and you'll find that it's light on its feet and body control is excellent. Through a series of bends, the RS 245 never broke its composure and handled itself neatly enough, thoroughly deserving of its positioning as a proper sports sedan. |
|
Dress-up bits also separate the car visually from the regular Octavia. Aside from subtle badging, it wears more aggressive bumpers and larger 18-inch wheels. It is the same on the inside, with Alcantara sports seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a generous amount of red stitching all around.
Apart from its obvious performance credentials, the RS 245 remains to be versatile. Just like the standard Octavia, room for passengers is abundant and boot space in the standard seating configuration is a charitable 590 litres.
The souped-up version of the Octavia provides both driving fun and family practicality in spades, without the costliness associated with performance models in this segment. |

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF SV
Price: N/A | Distributor: Volkswagen Group Singapore
|
|
|
Volkswagen's Golf SV has received a facelift that sees it losing the 'Sportsvan' designation in a bid to reinvigorate the model's image, and the car is all the better for it. The facelifted car has the cosmetic changes to back up its new name as well, with redesigned bumpers front and back, LED head lights, as well as roof rails all fitted as standard, giving the car a more rugged overall look.
Not that the car makes any concessions when it comes to practicality. The 500-litre boot can be extended to 1,520 litres with the rear seats folded, while folding tray tables behind the front seats, as well as multiple storage spaces scatted throughout ensure that the car will still easily pack your entire family and then some more.
The cabin is also entirely familiar, comfortable and well-laid out, while the quality of materials used is good. |
|
Power for the Golf SV is drawn from a 1.4-litre TSI engine, with 123bhp and 200Nm. It delivers power in a perky and responsive enough fashion to support all manners of civil driving, and drivers will have no problems attempting overtaking manoeuvres on the highway. Settle onto a more relaxed drive and the Golf SV also rewards with a cabin that is quiet and well-insulated from the outside world.
As expected of an MPV, the ride in the Golf SV is excellent, with a soft suspension setup that offers good amounts of comfort. Driving on twistier roads will see the chassis doing a decent job of keeping body roll in check given the car's size, and it also steers with a fair amount of precision and accuracy that is uncommon in this class, a testimony to the excellent MQB chassis which it shares with the Golf hatch.
For those looking for a handsome looking compact MPV, the Golf SV delivers plenty enough to pip the rest of the competition. |

The fifth iteration of Subaru's Forester is now based on the Subaru Global Platform, allowing it to be more agile, and yet more rigid at the same time. The new platform also aids greatly in its rolling resistance, something that was absent in its predecessors.
The car also breaks away from its preceding versions by ditching turbocharging, and it now comes with a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre that pushes out 154bhp and 196Nm of torque. Those with a disciplined right foot will be rewarded, however, with a refined and comfortable ride. External noises are kept well at bay in the Forester, allowing all on board to enjoy a peaceful and composed in-car driving experience. Add to that the fact that the CVT in this car comes across as natural as the usual torque converters, and you have a winning formula for this competitive segment. |
|
But the Subaru Forester likewise hits hard when it comes to the cabin with a multi-functional steering wheel and use of high-quality plastics, while the massive glass roof also helps to give the car a bright and spacious ambience, emphasising the generous space for all passengers. Boot space meanwhile stands at 520 litres, easily swallowing several luggage and grocery bags. Knock the rear seats down and the hauling capacity will increase a couple of notches to 1,775 litres.
Add in the car's suite of safety technologies that include pre-collision braking, lane departure warning and lead vehicle start alert, and it is not hard to see why the Subaru Forester is our leader in the SUV segment. |

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a common sight on our roads and it is not hard to guess why. Mitsubishi has constantly made cosmetic changes to the Outlander and the current model sports handsome matte silver trims along with new head lights and redesigned bumpers that give the SUV the much-needed robust image to compete in the crowded segment.
The 2.0-litre engine sports 148bhp and 190Nm of torque, allowing the seven-seater SUV to keep up with the rest of the pack. Additional features such as Auto Stop and Go, along with an Eco mode switch also allow you to save on your fuel bill. The latest two-wheel drive versions also benefit from a lighter steering, allowing you to settle into a more relaxed state-of-mind and take yourself away from the stresses of driving in Singapore.
Those shopping in this segment will also be impressed with the well-built cabin, which features electric seats as well as an electric handbrake for added convenience. Accommodation is generous for seven passengers and there is good headroom and legroom for three Asian adults in the second row, while the ability to slide the second-row fore and aft by up to 250mm allows you to fine-tune legroom between passengers. |
|
591 litres of boot space with the rear seats folded also ensures that the Outlander will easily swallow the whole family's cargo as well.
With a host of added safety features such as Active Stability Control and ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Mitsubishi's Outlander certainly offers an interesting alternative to the typical family-haulers, dressing its myriad of abilities in a cool and affordable SUV suit to win the segment this year. |

The Range Rover Evoque may look similar to its predecessor, but is actually all new. Not that looking like the car that preceded it is a bad thing either, given that the Evoque still looks mighty handsome. With its boxy design softened up with rounded edges and simple surfaces, the car easily evokes the silhouette of the brand's larger brothers.
The new car is now built atop the Premium Transverse Architecture platform, and is 13% stiffer than the previous car, delivering a tighter body and improved on-road refinement. Body roll and flex in corners are also notably reduced.
With a ride that is soft and comfortable, the Evoque delivers large on comfort. And its engine likewise reflects this philosophy. Tuned to deliver a healthy 365Nm of torque, the 2.0-litre engine in this First Edition variant also produces 245bhp, enough to deliver the car at pace through the urban jungle. Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 system is also fitted in the Evoque, allowing you to take the occasional stint through the less-beaten path should you feel like it. |
|
The car's cabin is steeped in equipment, with a dual-screen Touch Pro Duo system, a 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display, as well as a head-up display. The Evoque also features the ClearSight rear view mirror, which uses a camera located in the roof antenna pod to display a video feed showing what's behind the car, delivering you a clear image in your rear-view mirror, that is unobstructed by your rear passengers' heads and the aperture of the rear windscreen.
With a well-appointed interior and stylish exterior, the Evoque beats the rest of the segment by offering those looking for a well-equipped and comfortable premium SUV something different from the typical German rivals. |

The DS 7 is the first car from the brand to be developed from the ground up by DS itself. Unveiled at this year's motor show and pitched against the typical slew of German rivals, the DS 7 sports generous proportions and a stance that makes it look like it belongs a segment above.
Look closer and you'll quickly realise the car expresses itself as a unique offering design-wise. With a diamond-shaped mesh grille that matches the design of the taillights, LED headlamps that comprise of three squarish blocks that swivel as you unlock the car, and a vivid DS-signature gold coloured paint finish, the DS 7 Crossback looks anything but regular.
On the move, the 1.6-litre turbocharged powerplant does a good job of carrying the brand, with a generous 225bhp and 300Nm of torque being sent to the front wheels of the car via a fuss-free eight-speed automatic gearbox. Active Scan Suspension, which only works in Comfortable drive mode, actively adjusts the suspension and allows it to soak up road bumps accordingly, thanks to a camera and a number of sensors, giving the car a thoroughly plush ride. |
|
The interior of the car likewise continues the luxurious theme, and features Nappa leather upholstery cushioning every surface. The 12-inch infotainment screen, meanwhile, houses a myriad of features such as the air-conditioning controls, massage functions, mood lighting, navigation, a 14-way Electra sound system and reverse camera.
Rear passengers are treated to automatically reclining seats, and will also able to enjoy their own climate control system. With a generous wheelbase of 2,738mm, legroom is generous for all passengers, while the 555-litre boot space adds significant practicality as well.
With quirky looks and a comfort-oriented philosophy that is refreshing against its German peers, the DS 7 pips the post to win the segment. |

BMW X5
Price: N/A | Distributor: Performance Motors
|
|
|
BMW's fourth generation X5 sees itself competing in a crowded segment but still manages to stand out. For starters, the new car is now larger in all directions, translating into increased head, shoulder and legroom, especially for the rear passengers.
Practicality is also ensured, as the car now comes with seven seats as standard, and cargo carrying capacity remains at a total of 645 litres of boot space with the third row folded, which then expands to 1,860 litres when you fold the second row. All this is easy to achieve as well, with buttons in the boot area that allow you to fold the benches automatically.
But to lead in the segment require more than just space. Thankfully, the X5 delivers plenty of technology, with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, comprising of a 12.3-inch digital instrument display as well as a 12.3-inch Control Display running BMW's latest Operating System 7.0, allowing you to access a variety of functions including gesture control and the Intelligent Personal Assistant, activated by simply saying "Hey BMW". |
|
A suite of driver assistance systems also comes with the X5, including BMW's Parking Assistant Plus, Reversing Assistant and Cruise Control with braking function.
On the go, the BMW X5 delivers a sweet ride. With a 3.0-litre turbocharged engine delivering 335bhp and 450Nm of torque, the car pushes along effortlessly, while its two-axle air suspension system with automatic self-levelling soaking up bumps in the road, significantly improving overall ride comfort.
Show it a series of twisty roads and the car will still deliver ample amounts of grip, with a steering that is fairly precise, making for a reasonably engaging drive.
With so many areas well covered, it is little wonder the X5 makes it to the top of the segment. |

SUZUKI JIMNY
Price: $155,888 - $156,888 | Distributor: Champion Motors
|
|
|
The Suzuki Jimny has been around for almost half a century, spanning through four generations, building on its initial proposition as an off-road capable compact offering - much like a miniature Jeep.
The latest iteration of the Jimny sports a design that reminds you of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Unlike the latter, however, it features a black plastic grille with vertical slats that harks back to the Jimnys of the past. Between the wide tough-looking arches filled with knobby tyres and a clearly higher than usual ride height, it is plain to see that this car is oozing with character.
The Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre engine that puts down 100bhp and 130Nm of torque. While it might not seem like much, once you put its relatively light kerb weight of just over a ton and a low-range set of cogs into consideration, you will know that it is a capable off-roader. |
|
Take a seat inside and you will notice solid black plastics with angular shapes held together with screws. You might be tempted to knock its lack of luxurious leather trimmings, but remember, this is an off-roader made with a utilitarian purpose in mind, and these hardy plastics are clearly here for a reason - to endure plenty of beatings.
Impressively, the Jimny comes packed with a myriad of advanced safety features such as Lane Departure Warning, Electronic Stability Programme, Anti-lock Braking System, Brake Assist Function and Hill Descent Control among others.
You don't buy a Jimny and expect it to be a regular SUV. You buy one to take you to places that others can't. |

|
BMW's flagship SUV is all that you would expect - huge, luxurious, comfortable and packed to the brim with technology. The X7 is the pinnacle of BMW's luxury SUV lineup, deserving of the '7' moniker that has adorned the German marque's flagship sedans.
Measuring more than five metres long , two metres wide and almost two metres tall, the sheer size of the X7 is the first thing that crosses the mind of onlookers. The front end features the iconic BMW kidney grille, flanked by a pair of sleek and elegant head lights.
Open the doors on the X7 and you will be greeted by an extremely spacious cabin outfitted with plush leather seats and trimmings. As expected of a flagship BMW, the level of technology found inside the X7 is unlike what you will see in other lesser SUVs. It features an impressive infotainment system with more menus that you'll ever explore, and a ton of configuration options on just about everything in the cabin and buttons to adjust everything - from the massage intensity to the incline of the rear seats. |
|
Powered by a responsive 3.0-litre engine that puts out 335bhp and 450Nm of torque, the X7 is no slouch despite its immense size and weight. In the handling department, BMW does a great job as usual, conquering corner with minimal body roll and excellent stability while still offering an extremely comfortable ride.
Should you desire even more opulence than what the standard X7 offers, you can check the box for the fancy Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof option, which is made up of more than 15,000 light elements!
The X7 is excessive in size, technology, features, comfort and many other things - it is just what you would expect from a flagship BMW, nothing less. |

You might be tempted to brush the Kia Stonic off as 'yet another crossover', but wait! This cheerful ride punches above its weight with a peppy turbocharged engine. There are plenty of reasons to get a Stonic, especially so for drivers in a city-state such as Singapore - its minute footprint makes it a god-send for city driving!
The handsome Stonic doesn't feature any futuristic or polarising designs. Instead it adopts a simple and pleasing design that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Audi Q2. However, do not perceive this as a lack of character. In fact, there is no way for anyone to miss the signature Kia 'tiger nose' grille when you are looking at one.
Despite its cutesy exterior, the Stonic packs quite a punch thanks to a perky turbocharged 1.0-litre engine that puts out 118bhp and 171Nm of torque - figures that you wouldn't expect from 1.0-litre engines of the yesteryears. To make things even more attractive, the powertrain is completed with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox that shifts rapidly yet smoothly. |
|
Taking a ride in the Stonic is a comfortable affair thanks to its soft suspension that soaks up bumps well and an engine that is quiet and unobtrusive when driven lightly.
While the interior isn't the most spacious, the sunroof and simple interior design make the cabin of the Stonic a relaxing place to be in. Equipped with a 7.0-inch infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, there isn't much more you can yearn for in a compact runabout.
The Stonic isn't soul-stirringly exciting, but it is undoubtedly an effective compact crossover that does the job. |

Built on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform, there's much to be expected from the Skoda Karoq. We are talking about Audi levels of refinement in not just the powertrain, but also its driving characteristics.
The Karoq features intricately sculpted lines, creating a clean and pleasant design - something that isn't always seen on crossovers. While the Karoq isn't the largest offering from Skoda, it features plenty of clever features that greatly improve practicality.
It is equipped with VarioFlex rear seats that splits evenly, slides and recline individually. Should you find the need for maximum cargo space, all three rear seats can also be completely removed by the average user, expanding the boot space to a ridiculous 1,810 litres! There is also a pair of Velcro-affixed partitions and an easy-to-use netting to help with arranging your cargo and keeping them in place. |
|
Powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine making 148bhp and 250Nm of torque, there is sufficient power to get the Karoq up to speed smoothly and swiftly. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that shifts smoothly and decisively further adds to the driving experience.
Equipped with cylinder deactivation technology, the Skoda Karoq is able to achieve improved fuel economy under light load conditions by shutting down two of its four cylinders.
With a sharp steering and sufficiently firm suspension, the Karoq manages a sweet balance between comfort and sportiness. Indeed, the Karoq is a balanced crossover, offering sufficient space, great practicality through a clever design, high levels of refinement as well as a reasonable price tag. |

In the extremely saturated segment of compact crossover SUV, the Lexus UX stands out from the rest with its bold design that incorporates a slew of angular details and sculpted lines.
Looking straight on at the UX, the first thing you notice is Lexus' iconic spindle grille that adorns its entire lineup. The next thing you realise, is the UX's similarities to a sports coupe. BMW 8 SERIES
Price: N/A | Distributor: Performance Motors
|
|
|
Take one look at the all new BMW 8 Series Coupe, and you know that you're looking at something a little bit special.
Of course, the striking design of this two-door coupe is hard to overlook. With its sharp lines, long bonnet, flowing roofline and low-slung body, the 8 Series delivers plenty of muscular road presence befitting of a coupe.
However, where the 8 Series most impresses is in being 'Premium', as this category necessitates. Inside, you get the full-blown BMW luxury experience. Packed to the brim with the latest in BMW tech, from the new Operating System 7.0 with the Intelligent Personal Assistant to convenience features like the Reversing Assistant and Park Assist, the 8 Series delivers all the equipment you can possibly asked for.
Of course, it also ranks high on luxury. With high quality materials (including the option of glass application), dead straight stitching and extremely high build quality, there is no doubting that you are sitting within a high-class automobile. |
|
Out on the road, the 8 Series impresses with its grand touring capabilities. Driven lightly, it is comfortable and forgiving. Even with the low seating position and its rather big footprint, the car never feels cumbersome or difficult to drive. The ride quality in the Comfort setting is also extremely amiable.
Flick the car into Sport mode, and it certainly transforms into a sports car. With ample power from its soulful V8 powerplant, agile handling thanks to rear-wheel steering, and a excellently balanced chassis, the 8 Series handles with much more agility than it's size would suggest.
All these factors come together to create a car that truly stands out – a Premium Coupe that is equally adept at being a comfortable grand tourer as it is being an aggressive sports car. |

The four nominees in this year's Sports Coupe segment all offer vastly different experiences. The BMW M2 Competition is the most aggressive, hard-core and singularly focused car, and certainly the most track-focused model here. The new Porsche 911 is still very much the benchmark sports car, though some will (rightfully) point out that its become a little predictable. The Alpine A110 delivers a unique experience with its stripped back, bare bones ethos, and undoubtedly fills a very specific niche.
And then, there's the new Toyota Supra.
Yes, it's a divisive car, the Supra. Some will lament that it is too recognisably BMW. From the powertrain to the switchgear to even the infotainment system, there's no shying away from the fact that the Supra is built on a vast BMW skeleton. That's not a bad thing, though – this means you get German engineering precision and quality, and no one's saying no to that.
Where the Supra distinguishes itself is the way it drives. It is certainly on the lighter side, more akin to the Alpine than the BMW or the Porsche. It's deft and alert on its feet, with the sharp steering and agile front end allowing you to easily place it through corners. This grants the Supra a high level of instinctive responsiveness, something absolutely important for a sports coupe. |
|
There's also plenty of aggressiveness and punch, thanks to a hearty 3.0-litre engine (thanks once again, BMW) that propels the car to 100km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
Where the Supra also impresses is with its surprising docility when driven lightly. The suspension is forgiving and supple, meaning that driving it daily won't cause you backaches.
And of course, there's just the way it looks – there's no denying that with its mean front fascia, flowing lines and bulbous arches, the Supra looks every part of the sports car that it authentically is.
All four cars deliver something a little different, depending on what you want. With the Supra, it delivers the best combination of lightness, sportiness, usability and desirability, and that's why it's a worthy winner. |

The new Z4 is aggressively styled, with clean, crisp lines and a muscular rear end that is sure to draw curious looks. Inside, it's every bit a modern BMW, with ample technology like the brand's latest Operating System 7.0 and plenty of quality of life improvements.
The Z4 also impresses with its road-holding capabilities. Traction is ample, steering is accurate and direct, and the car kicks out plenty of power from its 3.0-litre powerplant. |
|
Of course, where the Z4 is most at home is with the roof down. Driven lightly, it's an easy-going and attention-grabbing convertible that manages to still deliver that all important quality – it makes you feel cheerful and special. And in a convertible, that's what truly matters.
The convertible segment is an admittedly small one, but the new BMW Z4 stands tall with its combination of modern appointments, broad range of use, sharp driving dynamics and head-turning looks. It's a fun-loving and joyful car that delivers its own unique and bubbly roadster personality. |

All the cars in this category are all designed with an eye firmly trained on the future. With the accelerating concerns about global warming and the need to reduce carbon emissions, car manufacturers have all come around to the importance of electrification.
That said, different companies have adopted very different approaches to the matter of electrification. For Jaguar, it is the I-PACE Electric, the brand's first ever electric production model.
The I-PACE cleverly embodies many of the current automotive trends – it's a crossover, it's high-tech, and it's got plenty of driver assistance technologies.
The electric powertrain, with 696Nm of instant torque, makes for frenetic acceleration quite alarming for a car this size. That, combined with the car's lower centre of gravity and assured handing ability, means that the I-PACE is a surprisingly fun car to drive as well. |
|
The I-PACE also delivers a high level of luxury. The cabin features a futuristic design, with premium materials and high levels of practicality and comfort as well.
In this category, the I-PACE stands out because it proves that the future of electro-mobility does not have to be boring, generic or uninspired. By combining sharp looks and futuristic luxury with good range and a fun drive, the I-PACE is a worthy winner, and a heartening example of what's to come in the future. |

NISSAN SERENA
Price: N/A | Distributor: Tan Chong Motor Sales
|
|
|
The Nissan e-POWER is the first in what will be a growing lineup of e-POWER models from Nissan, and showcases the brand's individual approach to hybrid technology.
Unlike other parallel hybrids that use both the electric motor and petrol engine to drive the wheels, the Serena's 1.2-litre petrol engine instead only acts as a generator, powering the batteries that in turn send current to the electric motors.
By having just the electric motors driving the wheels, you get some unique benefits of electric driving, such as instant torque and serene operation, without the hassle of long charging times and range anxiety. |
|
That said, the Serena isn't all technology and no functionality, either. Indeed, as family MPV, it performs well, boasting plenty of space and convenience features like the hand-free sliding doors. The dual opening tailgate is also another innovative feature, adding to the car's suite of convenience options.
Thanks to e-POWER technology, this big seven-seater MPV can also boast an impressive fuel economy figure of 15.2km/L. As Nissan looks to continue to electrify its lineup, the Serena e-POWER is indicative of an innovative yet practical way of doing so, and is thus the winner of this year's Hybrid category. |

MAZDA 3 HATCHBACK
Price: $202,888 | Distributor: Trans Eurokars (Mazda)

How do you determine the best car of 2019? There are certainly multiple criteria that need to be met. The car needs to be visually appealing both on the outside and the inside. It must have features that improve the driveability and liveability of the car. It must be compelling to drive, both in a casual and spirited manner. It needs to be innovative and bring new ideas to the table to push the conversation forward as far as what a car can do. And as voting contributes significantly to the overall result, the car must be accessible and appealing to the average consumer.
Having driven more than 100 cars this year, we can safely say that very few cars met all the criteria. Some may be deeply exciting and dynamically outstanding, but lack the mass-market appeal or affordability. Some may be extremely affordable and practical, but lacks the emotional appeal to make it stand out.
Among all the cars this year, one car manages to set itself atop the rest – the new Mazda3 Hatchback.
Visually, the Mazda3 distinguishes itself with its minimalistic form, curvaceous lines and fluid demeanour. It's a car that draws your eyes to it. Inside, the same minimalistic quality shines through – the cabin is neatly and sensitively designed, featuring high quality materials and top-notch craftsmanship. The result is a cabin that boasts refinement and sophistication we normally expect from cars of a much higher price bracket.
Of course, the car is also feature packed. You get LED head lights, an 8.8-inch infotainment display, a head-up display, as well as a 7.0-inch LCD central dial cluster. The car also comes with the full i-Activsense suite of safety and driver assistance systems to make your everyday drive safer and more convenient. Of note is the Radar Cruise Control, a feature you won't find on any other cars in this class. |
|
Mazda has also brought a new innovative feature to the Mazda3 – a 24V mild-hybrid assistance system. The system helps to power on-board components and facilitate engine start/stop, which contributes to lowering the car's overall fuel consumption.
On the road, the Mazda3 impresses with its balance between comfort and sportiness. Driven lightly, it demonstrates excellent on-road comfort and manners. Turn into a few corners and Mazda's penchant for making fun to drive cars come through – the steering delivers good feel and accuracy, and the car handles with great balance and verve.
Where the new Mazda3 manages to outshine the competition is in delivering great value and quality. It's a highly refined and well-rounded package that delivers the sort of quality you'd expect to pay quite a bit more money for. It's desirable, practical, comfortable, and definitely accessible to the average buyer. All in all, it's a car that anyone can get excited about, and that's why it is Sgcarmart's Car of the Year 2019. |

HONDA CIVIC
Price: N/A | Distributor: Kah Motor
|
|
|
Since it was first launched back in 2016, the 10th generation Honda Civic has proved to mighty popular in Singapore. Just take a quick glance out onto the road and you're sure to spot one.
In 2019, the Honda Civic underwent a light facelift. Aesthetic upgrades like new chrome trimming and the addition of a shark fin antenna help freshen up the car's exterior.
Where the car has been notably improved is inside the cabin, especially with the infotainment system. Honda has thankfully fitted the Civic with physical controls to adjust the volume and air-con fan speed. These were previously done using the touchscreen, and the new physical controls allow much more simple yet accurate operation.
Elsewhere, Honda has updated some software, as well as changed some materials on the steering wheel and dashboard trim panel. |
|
What hasn't changed, though, is the way the Civic drives. The turbocharged 1.5-litre powerplant provides plenty of straight line pace, but it is the car's engaging dynamics and assured handling that has always been its strongest suit.
Fundamentally, the Honda Civic hasn't changed in this facelift. It continues to deliver exactly what buyers are looking for – a highly practical and sensible family sedan with strong badge recognition and respect.
Being the 2019 Top Viewed Model in 2019 further cements the Civic's strong reputation, and continues to highlight its popularity in its segment, and in Singapore. |
