Hyundai Mobis has developed a foldable steering wheel.
Designed for use in future mobility vehicles, the Hyundai Mobis foldable steering system can move forwards and backward up to 25cm, freeing up space in the cabin of any vehicle for the driver.
It is additionally compatible with the firm's Steer by Wire system, which is said to offer optimal steering performance on various driving conditions while minimising vibrations that come from the road from transmitting into the steering wheel, allowing the driver to drive in a comfortable and stable manner.
To develop this system, Hyundai Mobis had to redesign the core parts of a steering system, including a column and a reaction force control device. The new system utilises a sliding rail mechanism for durability and reliability. Development of the technology is said to have taken two years, and Hyundai Mobis is currently filing patents for the new technology globally.
