The Mercedes-AMG SL43 comes with an electrically-assisted turbocharger

Following from the V8-powered SL revealed late last year, Mercedes-AMG has now added a new 2.0-litre variant to the range: The SL43.
Powering the SL43 is the M139 2.0-litre engine, producing 375bhp and 480Nm in this application. But more interesting is the fact that the engine in this SL is forced-fed via an electric turbocharger.
The turbocharger is powered by the 48V on-board electrical system which animates an electric motor that sits between the compressor wheel and intake section. This electric motor drives the shaft of the turbocharger directly and thus accelerates the compressor wheel before the exhaust gas stream starts to drive it conventionally.
Mercedes-AMG states the technology allows the turbocharger to run at speeds of up to 170,000rpm, delivering a very high airflow rate, alongside improved engine responsiveness.
This unique drivetrain is combined with a nine-speed multi-clutch transmission, allowing the SL43 to accelerate to 100km/h from a standstill in just 4.9 seconds.
SL43 gets the M139 2.0-litre engine, but force-fed via a new electrically-assisted turbocharger for a 375bhp output As with its V8-powered brethren, the Mercedes-AMG SL gets a 2+2 body, with space at the rear for those up to 1.5m tall. The new soft top has also been retained here, which opens or closes in just 15 seconds, at vehicle speeds of up to 60km/h.
The SL43 is differentiated from its more potent siblings by its redesigned front and rear apron, alongside its round tailpipes, in place of the more angular items on the SL63 and SL55.
In the cabin, of the SL43, a high-resolution 12.3-inch instrument cluster is integrated into a high-tech visor that prevents reflections caused by sunlight. The tilt of the central touch screen on the centre console can also be electrically adjusted from 12 to 32 degrees to avoid disturbing reflections when the roof is open.
A multi-link suspension design sits at the front axle, while at the rear, the car gets a five-link suspension setup.
