Ford’s group vice president of Global Product Development, Derrick Kuzak, said the new three-cylinder unit “will deliver horsepower and torque outputs equivalent to or better than most normally aspirated 1.6-litre gasoline engines”. The engine was featured in Ford’s Start concept car at the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, as well as the B-Max concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
“Consumers are telling us they want to buy affordable vehicles that get many more miles per gallon,” said Kuzak. “Our new 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine will give consumers looking for hybrid-like fuel economy a new, more affordable choice.” The engine is expected to be offered on Ford’s range of small cars such as the Ka and Fiesta hatchbacks.
Ford has not revealed full details of the ground-breaking new engine, but said that it will provide more information about the powerplant at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, which will be held in September this year.

The engine was designed by the engineering team at Ford’s Dunton Technical Centre in the U.K., and the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine promises to deliver performance of a larger four-cylinder unit with even higher fuel economy. It employs all of Ford’s EcoBoost technologies, such as turbocharging, direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT).
