Volvo XC90 set to get its long awaited successor in 2014

Set to be underpinned by the new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the crossover will feature an evolutionary design.
Details about the model are sketchy at the moment but it will be equipped with Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA) four-cylinder engines that promises to be lighter, more powerful and fuel efficient than the company's current six-cylinder units.
The new XC90 will be one of the biggest models spawned from the SPA platform. It will retain its practicality from the current model and feature seating for seven. The interior will be more luxurious than the current model, with glass panels and features a floating centre stack.
According to Peter Mertens, Volvo's Senior Vice President of Research and Development, "The new architecture covers about two-thirds of our total sales volume. With about 40 percent of all components shared by all car models irrespective of size, we will benefit from economies of scale, thus boosting our competitiveness." He added that the savings will enable the company to focus on "individual details that are important to our customers".
Volvo may have recently announced its updates for the 2013 XC90 but this does little to mask the fact that the model has now been on the market for over a decade. Thankfully, a second generation model or a successor is set to arrive.
