First seen in concept guise at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the production ready GLA, a compact SUV that Merc believes will set new benchmarks in efficiency as it mixes practicality with 4MATIC capability. The first Mercedes-Benz in the fast-growing compact SUV segment, it measures 4,417mm long, sits 1,804 wide and stands 1,494mm tall.
The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV to be optionally available with the new generation 4MATIC, permanent all-wheel drive system, with fully variable torque distribution in the U.K.

The power range of the 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol engines will extend from 156bhp in the GLA200 to 211bhp in the GLA250.
Two 2.2-litre diesel engines are also on offer starting with the GLA200 CDI that develops 136bhp and 300Nm of torque, which emits only 114g of CO2. On the other hand, the GLA220 CDI develops 170bhp and 350Nm of torque.
All the engines feature the ECO start/stop function as standard. The engines are combined with a six-speed manual transmission or with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission (standard for GLA250, GLA220 CDI and the 4MATIC models), which unites comfort and sportiness to an outstanding degree. The GLA250 4MATIC sprints from naught to 100km/h in a rather brisk 6.5 seconds, before climbing to a top speed of 233km/h.
Numerous driving assistance systems offer support in the GLA from the ATTENTION ASSIST drowsiness detection and radar-based COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST with adaptive Brake Assist, which can now help to protect against collisions from a speed of only 6km/h. The GLA will celebrate its world premiere at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt with first deliveries to showrooms in the U.K. in 2014.

The GLA has a flexible and variable interior like rear seats backrests that can be folded down completely and adjustable to a certain angle if required. The luggage compartment offers up to 836 litres of cargo with ease of accessibility thanks to the low sill and the wide tailgate - which can be operated automatically as an option.
