With seven models in the BMW X family all delivering a distinctly individual experience, there's certainly a BMW X car for everyone.
In this SUV-mad day and age where even supercar brands are producing their own SUVs, it's easy to forget that not that long ago, SUVs just weren't that much of a thing.

Not more than a couple of decades ago, 4x4s were primarily the domain of off-road vehicles. It was only in the mid-80s that the 'modern SUV' as we've come to know it came into existence.

Back in 1994, BMW took over the Rover Group, and that was the catalyst for the brand to develop its own range of high-riding, off-road capable vehicles. In 1999, the brand's first-ever SUV, the BMW X5, was born - and started its X family of cars.

Now, with the recent introduction of the first-ever BMW X7, the X family of cars is now fully formed and complete. Packed with the latest technology and equipment while still retaining BMW's trademark driving dynamism, the X family of cars deliver an authentic BMW experience. And yet, each X model, with its specific market placement, individual capability and unique character, manages to deliver something to satisfy the different needs of every driver out there.

BMW X1: Baby driver

The X1 serves as the entry point to the BMW X family - it's positioned to be accessible to the masses, whilst still delivering an authentic BMW experience. It's no surprise, then, that the X1 has become the brand's best-selling X model.

As the little baby of the family, the X1 certainly fits the bill. Yes, it may not have as comprehensive a suite of features as some of its bigger brothers, but it still retains the visual styling and personality of its larger X brethren. And, there's no denying that it's still a highly capable BMW SUV. Baby steps...

BMW X2: Young rebel

While its numerical designation may suggest otherwise, the BMW X2 is in fact the smallest car in the X lineup. Designed to deliver a highly engaging and sporty driving experience, the X2 caters to a bolder, more extroverted driver.

More aggressively styled, firmer riding and certainly sharper in handling, the X2 offers a different dynamic experience than the X1. It's the rebellious kid that comes home sporting a green Mohawk - not everyone's cup of tea, but undeniably bold and of his own character.

BMW X3: Good-natured son

The BMW X3 was the second X model to be launched after the X5, and was also the car that debuted the brand's xDrive all-wheel drive system. Since then, the car has matured significantly, packing ample on-road dynamism and off-road capability into a compact SUV package.

In many ways, it's the oldest child of the family - sensible, grown up and practical.

BMW X4: Quirky and perky

The X4 offers a sportier and more stylish take on the compact SUV. With it sleek design, raked roof and sharper dynamics and handling, it will appeal to drivers looking for the practicality and sensibility of an SUV, while still demanding a level of sportiness and undeniable style.

The X4 is that quirky child that you're never quite sure what he or she is up to - sometimes sensible, sometimes playful, and undoubtedly a little mysterious, the X4 is always comfortable in its own unique skin.

BMW X5: Stable hand

In many ways, the X5 is the forebearer of all of BMW's X models. Through four generations, it has served as the benchmark BMW SUV experience - thoroughly capable across all situations, delivering equal amounts of luxury and sportiness. It's also incredibly versatile, of course, and is offered in both five and seven-seat options.

The X5 is very much the grown up in the family - the sensible parent paving the way for the younger ones.

BMW X6: Stout presence

The X6 offers a different take on the SUV formula. First introduced in 2008 as a 'Sport Activity Coupe', the X6 looks to blend the practicality of an SUV with the style and stance of a coupe.

The cool uncle that turns up for family events wearing leather pants, swigging beer and telling stories about his adventures in South America? Yup, that'd be the X6.

BMW X7: The Godfather

The X7 is the newest member of the X family, but certainly also the grandest of them all. As the new flagship X model, the X7 delivers the full-on experience - packed to the brim with every new feature and technology available in the BMW arsenal.

As the biggest, most complete member of the X family, the X7 stands out as the granddaddy of them all. It is the ultimate distillation of the BMW X experience, taking everything that BMW knows and combining it together to deliver the grandest, most luxurious and most complete package.
